Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

Well, I went out to another trackday today and it was payback time at the track! I went down!!! Heh heh heh

It was the forth lap of the second session of the day. I just passed another rider in a left hander and was picking up some speed on a small straight.

I came up to a fast chicane, it's a fast left then a fast right. Well, I pushed left and felt the front pushing out and started drifting to the outside edge of the track. I'm thinking to myself to push harder, look deeper and tap a little rear brake to bring the front in, since I was pushing out.

Well, it didn't work I keep pushing out and was getting real close to the edge. so I straightened it up and thought I would run off the track to the inside, of the chicane. No dice! I waited to long to run off, so when I straightened it up I was facing the side of the rumble strip on the right turn chicane.

I ran off into the gravel and then struck the side of the rumble strip. I was tossed off my seat, but I still had a hold of the clip ons. I thought it was funny that I could see the front of my bike and see the rider behind me. I was able to some how get my but back on the bike and ride it across the track and into the gravel, before the front end tucked and threw me off.

Damage to the bike was not that bad considering the speed I was going and what happened. A guy on the side of the track at that turn told me my front wheel was about 1.5 ft in the air and the rear was a good 3 ft in the air. He said that it looked like I was doing a hand stand on the bike!

Here is some pictures of the damage, take a close look at the rim. I was able to hammer it back and ride it for 6 more sessions.

All and all, I had fun!

That sucks man, even if you were "gloating" just a few days ago...I would not wish that on anybody...looks like it could have been a LOT worse. Glad you're alright.

Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

That really sucks K9! Sorry to hear of it. But I think most anyone who participates in track days for very long at all must me ready to face these consequences, sooner or later. Same with serious canyon carving. I personally would love nothing more that to experience a track day or two, but I'm just not in the financial bubble where I can afford to phuck the bike up. Anyway, glad to hear you are seemingly just fine, and sorry about your really phucked up looking ride!

thats not the way to make us snow folks feel better. Glad you weren't hurt and the bike wasn't too bad and you could get back out there. Those rear sets are freakin sweet looking and so is the helmet (same one I have)

Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

Judging from your last pic, it was the Firebird east track. At least it is relatively safe with quite a bit of runoff and traps everywhere, and you didn't slam one of the abundant walls at the west and main tracks.
for getting back up and going out again!!

Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

Rick I'm sorry to read this report. I am very glad you were not seriously hurt and the bike is still functional. (Although, I still cannot believe you got that rim/bead to hold air!)

As you might know, we in the frozen North ride vicariously through other .orger's reports. Although jealous at times, we would never wish harm or an 'incident' such as this upon another. Therefore, since you are probably adequately sore by now, I retract our butt kicking appointment.

Get better fast!

Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

Thanks for all the well wishes! I'm a little sore today, but I'm OK and the bike is fixable. What's really funny is I have a set of race plastics on order.

Yeah, I know you guys are all messing with me and I was just messing with you. That's what so fun about this board! It's all good!!!

BDA116 - Yes, Firebird East. They increased the amount of pea gravel in the traps, so it's like two feet deep!

Maxib - You should have seen the rim before I hammered it back into semi-sorta place. It was a good 1/4 inch more out! The things you have to do to get back out on the track!

I told myself if it had any wobble or shimmy at all, I would call it a day. Took the 954 back out on the next session and ran about 1 second off my fastest pace. Not a single wobble or shimmy at all!

I did picture the bead breaking under hard braking, but that never happened.

Even with a crash, I had a great time at the track and got to use some of my BFH engineering skills!!!

Re: For all you guys up North, in the snow!

It looked like your rear sets held up well...did they or is that some "creative" photo work? anything else that you thought help to keep damage to a minimum? fame sliders, rear spools? now would be a good time for a product "crash test review" Just to let us know how some of the "bits" worked for you.
