My first track crash! :-(

So I went to an open track day at the end of may/beginning of june. I ended up lowsiding going 90 in turn 1, a big right hand sweeper. You can see the track layout at

www.smri-racing.org

I'm still trying to figure out what happened. There were a lot of factors that went into it: not enough sleep the night before, too much caffeine in the morning, a fight with the girlfriend, a shity inside line for a shity inside pass into the sweeper. But here's the real question I wanted to pose to you guys:

A seemingly experienced rider claims that my wreck was due to overheated tires. He claimed that a big factor in street/track hybrid tires overheating is due to running them underpressured on a hot day (temps were near 100F). They commonly give advice at that track to run 28/29 front/rear. So I did. Gradually as the day wore on I was getting more and more slip, front and back. Eventually I noticed a blueish sheen on the edges of my tires. Shortly thereafter, I was tucked over in turn 1, not doing ANYTHING with the throttle or brakes, and both tires just cleanly let go and sent me sliding.

Was the bluish sheen the petroleum in my tires coming up to the surface and greasing them?

Anyhow, despite the wreck I set record lap times for myself and really started to feel a rhythm for the track (this was my 2nd track day). I'm going back soon, with more sleep and slightly less speed, and maybe a pyrometer.

Here is a pic of me on the 929

You felt your front and rear tires sliding and still kept the same pace?

Re: My first track crash! :-(

I admit that it was a bad idea for me to not lessen my pace more than I did when I felt the first slips...but I wasn't too alarmed by them, as they felt small and relatively controlled. I realize in retrospect it was a sign of my tires heating up too much....anyone try the latest Pirelli Corsas? Most of the slips came from transitions between corners, not apexing them, but the tires let go at apex with 0 warning (and with no control inputs other than holding the current line)

If you were losing traction in transition, you're lucky you didn't highside. Do you have some flat track experience in your past?

Re: My first track crash! :-(

I wasn't in transition, I was at max lean coming around the apex when it happened, had been down at that lean for at least a second.

I don't have any flat track, no. I've ridden on the street for five years, and with the acquisition of this 929, have decided to try out track days again (I did it once before on a Yamaha 600R).

Re: My first track crash! :-(

Maybe too much lean angle?? I don't know about the overheating part, but the bluish tint on your tires is from the oil in the rubber coming up...which i guess is a possibility? ....maybe add couple p.s.i. next time, and not be afraid to back off a bit.(it's just a track day)
