I did a ride day run by Honda yesterday at Phillip Island. It was my first time on a race track and I can positively say it won't be my last! I've only been riding a few years and don't get a chance to get out as often as I'd like. I have a 98 CBR900RR (stock except for indicators, fender eliminator), and was at first a bit daunted by the number of new/flash bikes but I had the time of my life.
The weather was ok in the morning (first session at 9am). It had rained the night before but the track surface wasn't too bad. It stayed very cloudy and cool with a slight drizzle for most of the morning but just after lunch the sky cleared, the sun dried everything up and it got very warm.
There were 3 groups and each group got about 8 sessions of approx. 20 minutes. It was really interesting to see how much I improved after each session (I was gauging this by the speed of the other riders overtaking me and disappearing into the distance!) But I did get much quicker and smoother and found better lines through corners, and as the day got on I became much more confident in the corners and learnt to trust my tyres. At the end of the day I only had 6mm (1/4") of chicken strip on the rear so that's evidence that I was getting quicker and more confident. I'd put a new pilot power on the rear about a week before so it wasn't very worn. I was able to see how much closer to the edge of the tyre I was getting after each session.
I've had the bike less than a year and have never really pushed it before. I've learnt to appreciate the use of power and how quickly it can put you on your arse if not used properly. I know the newer bikes have way more power than mine but it's plenty for me for now.
By watching the other riders and slowly experimenting I was able to get my bum on the edge of the seat, hold on with the outside leg and hang the inside leg down. I was amazed how much quicker and easier the bike would turn and the speed I could carry through corners.
It was a shame when the last session ended because I just wanted to stay out there and keep going. I was on such a buzz! I can't wait to do another one!
