NHIS 8/29/07 with LAPS

rode NHIS for the first time last wednesday with Lean Angle Performance School. I was kind of intimidated by that track at first because of all the walls. the only other track I'd ridden before that was Grattan which doesn't have walls and has tons of run off. But its a short, relatively low speed, technical track.

first 2 sessions were follow instructor ones. I got really lucky and ended up going 1 on one with the same instructor both sessions. halfway through the second session we pulled into the hot pit and he made my day when he said "why are you in the C group?" my answer was that I had never been to NHIS and had only done a few track days before. he said I should probably move up to B in the afternoon. I was pretty happy about that. I ended up staying in C the whole day because the sessions kept getting cut short by crashes or off track excursions. the last session was all green though and I was passing people left and right. sometimes 3 or 4 at a time. so I guess it is time to move to intermediate.

turn 3 was the most intimidating because of the wall separating it from turn 10 on the other side. One time I came in way too hot for my skill level and ran it really wide but was slowed enough were I could make the turn without going down or going into the wall. I was also a witness to this crash at turn 3. There were 2 instructors separating us but I was closing in on him for the run up the hill to make the pass. first time seeing a crash in front of me, wasn't very much fun cause I almost ran into the instructor right in front of me because they both stopped to check on the guy. but because I was going so slowly behind them I managed to get through without incident. not sure if he was the guy with the possible broken ankle or the guy with the broken collarbone and concussion (both were transported). They should both be alright though.

here are some pics of that crash and some of me. all taken by NHFF. hopefully more to come soon.

bastid... I had planned on getting up to Loudon with LAPS this year... but, like grattan.... other stuff came up.

So this was your 4th track day or something? Not bad. I thought you were a veteran from the Grattan pics.

yup 4th day. NHFF takes some good pics and makes us all look good. he said he was having on off day on wednesday and ended up about half the pics he took were trash. I can't get his site to actually work for some reason but there should be more pics there. but I suppose since the beginner group were easy pickings its time to move up. the last session there was a 1098 who was having a little trouble passing a gsxr750 and I was having trouble passing him but once I got around the Duc the gsxr wasn't too hard. The guy on the gsxr came up to me after and said it was a good pace I was running after I passed him. sounded like he had to step it up a little to keep up and he enjoyed it.

I forgot to mention that in the raffle I won a half off certificate to the Penguin Racing School. so it looks like I'll be going back to NHIS on 10/5. if I can swing it maybe do LAPS on 10/10 but that will also depend on my tires.

Whats the full price on Penguin? I wanted to get the race license just so that I can run more events, not necessarily compete at 120%

I was considering LAPS on 10/10 because of their rain insurance... I dont mind a little rain but I'd hate to risk it in October, when it'd be fricken freezin.

When will you know for sure? It'd be nice to have a tow around the track.

Re: NHIS 8/29/07 with LAPS

I attended the September 24th track day at NHIS hosted by Moto Market out of Acton, Mass. I thoroughly enjoyed the time on the track and after attending both days hosted by Moto Market this summer at NHIS I would endorse their future track days. I also witnessed a couple of minor incidents in Turn 3 at NHIS. (each time the riders were able to walk away) Turn 3 is an off-camber right hander as the rider leaves the NASCAR track (rough transition) and climbs the hill onto the road course. Both track days were great for beginners with adequate instructors available for first and second timers like myself to experience track conditions and exploring the limits of tires and higher lean angles than achievable on the street.

Jhonda, sorry I didn't see your post earlier but I won't be able to make it next week for the LAPs day because I have to work. it should be warm enough still I bet though. do you plan on sticking around the area that night? I'll be in Concord that night around 9 probably doing my delivery.

Nuclear, turn 3 is the turn before the uphill when you're coming in looking at the wall. 4 is kind of the second half of it uphill after you cross back over the Nascar oval. How much were those trackdays? I'm gonna have to remember them for next year.

what the hell. I'm working the first 3 of those days. the last one is the day after my birthday so I can use that as my birthday holiday if I'm scheduled that day. guess I'm gonna have to do some shift switches if I wanna do those days. $200 is about the limit I wanna spend for NHMS, I really don't think the place is worth much more than that.
