The tunnels are bored through the blank cases while they're bolted together.
If you're planning to put two different cases together at the very least expect to have to run different upper and lower main bearing shells.
Oil clearances are only 2-3 thou so an upper case that's bored a couple of thou off centre and a lower case that's bored a couple of thou off centre could make it impossible to achieve oil pressure through the main bearings or transmission journals.
Cylinder heads and camshaft caps are the same.
It can be done though if you have a good mechanic that knows how to scrape bearing shells and cam journals.
