Yes, there would be a big difference between used and new both in performance and cost. You might also consider a Blackbird engine as I believe they fit in fairly easily.
What's wrong with your engine?

Since you have to pull the engine whether you swap it or build it, I'd pull it out and have a look at it anyway. I believe on the 900RR you can replace the rod bearings by removing the oil pan so you might even want to try that before pulling the engine out. If you do find the rod bearings are shot I'd recommend flipping the engine over, splitting the cases and replacing the main bearings as well.

| Re: Wanted ; 95 CBR9OORR MOTOR If rod bearings are gone, more than likely the crank is toast as well. You can have it fixed (but is expensive) or buy another used crank. I'm with Bladracer, you have crappy friends lol. How long did they borrow your bike? It must've had one heck of a leak or burning alot of oil to run out if it was a short period of time. If it did run low/out of oil you have alot more problems than just your lower end. If cam bearing surface in your head is damaged in any way the head is wasted.
