Concord, CA

Okay, so who knows about Concord, CA?

How expensive is it compared to SF, Oakland? How's the traffic? What tech opportunites are there?

Re: Concord, CA

Cheaper than SF. Traffic is like anything. It all depends on where you live and where you need to commute to.

Concord is pretty cool. It's quiet though, not a partying place.

Edit: BTW, the best part about Concord is probably how close it is to Danville. Danville is a rich town, and has lots of good food, a cool downtown, cool car museum, cruise nights (shutting down main st) every week in summer (and that my friend, is a good party)....

If you look at a map, you'll also see there are several open space preserves around there, so it doens't feel to citified.

Re: Concord, CA

so, say I have an opportunity to move there on contract. 6-18 months with a 99.9999% chance of going full time, would you do it? Good place to be? Are there multiple employment options available if I did get there and didn't like what I was doing? Ie, is there more than one powerhouse employer there? Obviously with SF and the entire bay area within striking distance, that offers a lot of opportunities, right? Heck, even San Jose isn't that far away...

Re: Concord, CA

San Jose is a NASTY commute from there.

My uncle lived in Danville, and commuting into the tech heart of SJ took well over an hour (if you were going during commute hour) each way. Concord is further.

There is lots of work around the Bay, it's not as good up there as down in the Silicon Valley, but there's work around. I'm not really familiar with companies up there.

Best advice I can give is just to start looking for postings online, and see if there's lots happening in the area.

Re: Concord, CA

To give you an idea, here's my old commute (but I'd stay on 680 as it's quicker).

http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newaddr=&taddr=&csz=sunol%2C+ca&country= us&tcsz=san+jose%2C+ca&tcountry=us

This normally took 45mins to an hour. (If you zoom out one, you'll see Concord is roughly double the distance.) To be honest, it was on the edge of my tolerance for a commute. Note: I lived up in a canyon in the Sunol/ Pleasanton Regional park area, and just the road down to 680 took 10-15 mins.

Much of the traffic snarl is the Sunol Grade on 680. It's pretty legendary in that area as a bad spot. So, it's not double the time up to Concord (though the 580-680 interchange sucks during commute hour too) but it's quite a bit longer.

Re: Concord, CA

Been through that area coming out of Reno. Nice place, right near the mountains, Reno just on the other side. Good skiing not far away, camping or the beach. Seems ideally located.

Two more kickers, lots of tracks with yr round riding. And here is the more important part.......you are close to us. awwwwwwwwwwww

Only downfall, too damn close to BERKLEY...

Enigneer with a clearance???? Drop me a PM. Come work at the Skunk.

They have the identical twin of Pine Knob music theatre in Concord (not that it's a good thing unless you enjoy canyon accoustics with your music).

If he rides to work let me know what he rides. I'll slap a fireblade sticker on his ride. Motorcycles only park in a few places.

I am a keyboard engineer. But is gets exciting. This one time, we had a tremor and..... the building shook.

Grew up in that area, comute to anywhere sucks, so finding work semi localy is best.. 580/680 interchange sucks when no one is on the road...and when its busy DAMN.. mind you this was 10 years ago when I left.. i can only imagine it now.. the upside its an awesome place Concord / Pleasant Hill / Martinez / Walnut Creek... lots of good riding, the people always seemed to be good.. low crime.. family type area.. Ide move back if it wasnt for the comunist smog laws...LOL

It's MUCH better. They've added lanes, and did a very large flyover project for merging onto the 580 (for all those poor schleps that commute from Stockton?! )

But how many hours to civilization?
Depends on what you call civilization? 5 min fm WSIR, 45 min fm Button Willow, 1.5 hrs from Fontana, 20 min fm LACR (dragracing), 20 min from Boquet canyon, 40 from the Crest, 1 hr fm all the riding you can handle in the Santa Monica Mtns. If you need or want shoppin' and all that crap, Palmdale/Lancaster has everything you need only 20 min away. Burbank, Santa Clarita, LA and all that mess is another 30-50 minutes on the weekend. We got skiing only 30 min away and there is always Mammoth that is 3 redlights, one right turn and about a 3 hr drive fm here. And if you are into dirt biking, I can get to 5000 acres of BLM land without ever hitting pavement and the cool thing is, I can get gas on the bike and be roostin within 100' of that. With that goes mountain bikin' paths galore.

But you are right, nothing to do here and nothing to see. Hopefully no one else discovers this HELL!

I am out by Edwards as you know. Little more country than some people like. Most of our peeps roll in fm Santa Clarita/Burbank and that area. Puts them in the middle and they are going against the flow of that mess going S. into LA.

Jobs galore on the website. post up and see what happens.
