Motorcycle beats up car

If you ever thought you were safe from motorcycles in your car, well not this car.

Scary to think how fast the bike was going.
And in that crash I think Id still prefer to be in the car.

Re: Motorcycle beats up car

Would jumping save the person? I ask, because I almost did that myself. I was in a heavy rain storm on the highway before work. Visibility was poor. At the last second, I found a stalled compact car in my lane with no lights on. I had a choice of jumping over it or going around. I decided to see if my bike could turn quickly in all that standing water. At 65mph, it did. Like nothing ever happened. A few hours later during break at work, I saw there was a fatility in that area. Glad it wasn't me.

There are a lot of variables in play. How fast are you going, if you have time to jump you should have time to take some evasive action like brake or swerve. To me that impact looks like it involved a decent amount of speed, I am no crash expert but I am guessing there is not much time to do much of anything in this case.

Re: Motorcycle beats up car

Jumping might sound nice, but if you feet dont clear the bars all thats going to happen if you catch your feet on the bars and get flipped face down on the top of the car while probably breaking both legs.

At a slower speed - I think Id rather stay on the bike and allow it to take some of the force - between the tyre and front forks bending it will reduce the g forces compared to hitting a solid object with your body.

In situations like this what you can do is aim for the front wheels, hopping that you have a sedan in front of you and not a big SUV and you might "fly" over the hood, provided that your legs clear the handle bars...(most times they do)

If you hit the car between the doors, its not possible to fly over it. First because the roof of the car it relatively high compared to a biker's position and second because the car in the middle is not as rigid as it is in the front or in the back. This means that if you crash between the doors, you will end up inside the car because there is no suspension, or wishbones, or engine to stop you and force you to jump over it.

Take the following picture for example. The accident happened last Summer. Car with 5 passengers. The driver performs an illegal U turn. Motorcyclist driving at insanely high speeds hits the car.

Both drivers dead. Co driver dead, all three passengers in the back severely injured. At the point this picture was taken, the co driver and the passengers in the back were removed from the car...Both drivers are still there in that pile of junk...

These guys had about 10 milliseconds to make a jump decision and then execute it. I don’t think it can be done.

Re: Motorcycle beats up car

My only car / bike interface happened a long time ago, Clear sunny day, wide road with central reservation, side road with myopic old bastard waiting to cross to the other carriagway. Just as I reached the point of no return, sure enough, out he came. I had a prospective Mrs. Dugen on the bike so bailing out was not an option. Had to ride it into the car, take the double hit of car body and then female body. What seemed to happen was that Bike hit car, young lady hit me and then I sailed up and onto the car roof. She ricochetted back onto her bum, unscathed, and I bounced back onto the road, winded but likewise intact, except for the two rabbit punches her elbows gave me, (I urinated blood for a week). Its ALL the luck of the draw.

dont believe anything, eary 80's my CBX 6 met its demise like the into the side of a mini. the mini jumped the robot, they where drunk 2 of them on the drivers stag night. Needless to say the driver died - my mate (who was riding my bike - sober) went over the car - no breaks at all.

So no one can tell me a car is safer.

I strongly suspect that in most altercations between motorcycles and cars the motorcycle (and its rider) get the shorter end of the stick. Otherwise it would be difficult to explain why bikes are so much more insanely dangerous than cars.

Re: Motorcycle beats up car

In responce to juggernut pic.

The Honda rider was traveling at such a "very high speed", his reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police estimate a speed of ~250 KM/h (155 mph) before the bike hit the slow moving car side-on at an intersection. At that speed, they predicted that the rider's reaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him to even apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 10 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by the Swedish Police and Road Safety Department. The sign above the display also noted that the rider had only recently obtained his license.
At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is traveling at 227 feet per second. With normal reaction time to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the above operator would have traveled over 363 feet while making a decision on what actions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that no actions were taken.

In other words, they didn't even have time to say, "Oh, ####!"

It might only be a matter of time until we see some clown attempt to impact a car at high speed and make such a leap just to see if it can be done. Youtube is spawning a global wave of "video stupidity" so nothing would surprise me.
