| The end of a fireblade I would like to thank you all for your help all these years. This past Wednesday, i lowsided the 929 at Mosport track. I was doing just under 100mph end the front gave in. The bike is a write off, the frame is cracked but the engine still starts perfectly, got to give it to honda. Thanks to the gear my injuries are minor. Three broken fingers, broken hand, unable to move right arm due to sore shoulder, road rash to the left arm and a left foot that is twice its normal size but considering that the bike feel on my foot, the sidi did a great job.
I will be looking for another honda next year, until then i will be riding my street bike, but that is not for another 6 weeks.... http://www.redcedarphotography.com/w...fireblade1.jpg http://www.redcedarphotography.com/w...fireblade2.jpg |

| Re: The end of a fireblade Ouch. I hope you have a speedy recovery... Do you know what could have caused the front end to just go?
From looking at your pictures (In your gallery), it seems she was a beautiful looking bike pre-accident.
Strip the 929, keep the parts you think could come in handy and flog the rest... Then buy another one

thank you all for the well wishes; i am going well. I am sad for the bike, it was in mint condition, not a mark on her, here is a picture. http://www.redcedarphotography.com/w...ireblade10.jpg
the gloves were joe rocket, all the equipment did well except for the gloves, they fell apart. I hit my head several times, one big hit on the asphalt and several others on the grass, according to a witness, I stopped 200 ft from the initial crash an did 4 complete rolls before coming to a stop. I remember seeing the sky and the dirt several times and thinking, Am I going to stop? |

| Re: The end of a fireblade If you liked thet 929 so much, why not just get another frame? ebay has em' all the time... nontitled ones are reasonably priced, and would do fine for track use... Is there more major damage, that's just not evident in the pics? |

| Re: The end of a fireblade Good Suggestion I FLY LOW, unless he used the bike on the road too?
BY the way he phrased his first post "until then i will be riding my street bike" I think this was his full time track monster....?
Would be a shame to see her go - she really was beautiful.

| Re: The end of a fireblade that was my only other thought.. but there are some titled frames out there, still for considerably less, than the cost of a whole new ride... but if it's time to retire it officially, then, I reckon it's a good excuse for a shiny new ride, in the stable...
side note, what's the specs on the engine? miles? work done on it? any damage from the lowside? if you do part it out, how much are you looking to get for the engine? |

I'm interested in a damaged frame to build my racebike from scratch.

Btw, can frames be re-welded if cracked? Is it safe?

| Re: The end of a fireblade if you have someone that knows what they are doing, I wouldn't see why not...
I know a guy that built baha race trucks, then moved into restoring aircraft, and then wound up producing his own line of aircraft... The man is a talented artist, in all forms of metal work, from structure, in steel and aluminum, to body and finish...
He knows how to make it strong and light...
People hand build race frames for much larger projects than that...
the key is to find someone that knows what the heck they are doing, and can get the frame trued back up, should it be tweaked... |

Half of it is still on the bike...

| Re: The end of a fireblade The frame was welded together by Honda first.
Welding it again isn't going to alter it significantly if done professionally.

| Re: The end of a fireblade Man sorry to hear about that man. That was a beautiful bike.
On a funny note. When I looked at the pics of it crashed it looked liked there was an airbag deployed. I was like "What the hell an airbag". Then I zoomed in and noticed they were rags. |

| Re: The end of a fireblade thank you guys, I am not sure how to proceed from here. I might make ebay my best friend and get it back together. All the plastics are gone in the crash but i can always get racing plastic. Even though this bike was fully street legal, it was only used on the track. I still have two other bikes for the street. |

| Re: The end of a fireblade Just a quick note, in case you dont know (seems to be some confusion)
If a bike is written off and is a 'technical write off'. i.e; not completely destroyed or burned. There are four categorys- A,B,C and D.
C and D category write off's are where the bike is so badly damaged, It would cost more to repair than to replace. But the chasis (frame) is not damaged.
Category A and B are write off's where the bike is classed as unsafe, because of damage to the chasis (frame). These are not legally allowed to be re-registered after they have been written off, even by authorised dealers.
So to cut a long story err long!! you can NOT re-weld a bike frame, no matter how well it's done.
I have traded a good few insurance written off 'technicals' over the years, so thats why I know. (the same applies to cars as well, except that a car chasis can be straightened by an authorised dealer, as long as the insurance company that writes it off doesn't consider it 'unsafe after repair'). Now you know.
Anyway, get well soon Maser, hope ya have a speedy recovery dude. |

| Re: The end of a fireblade That may be the case in the UK. I also buy my bikes as wrecks or write-offs. A mate scored an '04 1000RR for $3500 last year with _entirely_ cosmetic damage but it's a stat write-off so needs a frame to register it when he finshes racing it. We've been right through it and it doesn't come close to complying with stat write-off requirements as it only had cosmetic damage.
Here in Oz, we have only two conditions of write-off. A Statutory Write-off is stickered and has the VIN tag removed or destroyed and the _frame_ can never be registered again. You can definately put another frame on the bike and register it again though. To be a stat write-off it has to have met three of seven impact conditions or be immersed underwater for a period.
However, these things usually only apply to insurance vehicles that are assessed for repair. If you crash your bike and repair it the MOT doesn't know it was ever in a "write-off" condition regardless of it's condition.
My ZX6R went under the front of a car which bent the frame 20 degrees and smashed the front wheel into the headers.
It wasn't an insurance job though and the owner simply sold it to me still registered for $1000.
I replaced the frame with another one that's only bent 3.5 degrees and it rides fine. I also put SRAD wheels and '04 GSXR600 forks on it.
Bike frames can also be straightened although aluminium can't be straightened very much at all. The additional 3.5 degrees of rake in my ZX6 is considered un-straightenable for example.
You _can_ weld the frame if you wish but it is possible it _might_ be picked up at inspection and rejected. For racing there's no such inspection as you can do whatever you like to your frame.

| Re: The end of a fireblade I would imagine that if the welding is done in a place where you cant easily see it, it wouldnt be a problem at inspection. I have no idea if welding a frame is legal or not, but while i was riding through vegas last summer i met a guy with an R1 who had run into the side of a car that decided to pull out across his lane at about 60MPH. The front wheel was pushed into the headers, and the steering head cracked...among other things of course. But he said that he had had it straightened and re-welded, and was in the process of putting it back together... |

| Re: The end of a fireblade I am not sure, it makes financial sense. Too many parts need to be replaced to get this bike on the track again, including a rear rim. Once I gain full use of my hands, I will go at it with my tools and try to determine the total extent of the damage. I can get a 929 for around $4000. I might get another one and go from there. |

| Re: The end of a fireblade Replacing the wheel is probably the easiest fix.
A 1000RR wheel goes straight in and is nearly 500gms lighter than the 929 wheel. I'm running '06 wheels on mine. If you machine an aluminium bearing spacer and trim the sprocket flange back flush with the sprocket you save another 200gms.
So, it's not just a repair, it's actually a performance mod ;-)

keep this one for a parts bike, if you can afford it... you say the engine's good.. plus anything that wasn't tweaked...
what all did you do to yours, to make it track ready?
Any engine, and suspension mods? |
