| Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... I had a touch of misfortune 10 or so days ago, and managed to hit a left hander a bit too hot- ive posted some photos of the outcome, which is one smashed up bike ( the vegetation is a personal modification! ) and a broken right Fibia, Tibia, Heel, and also the bridge of my foot. It was dislocated too, and just hanging off!!! Im out of action for a fair bit now so i wont be riding for a while, which is a bummer, as i love Autumn riding.... but they pinned and plated my ankle so it needs time to recover. Im glad it wasnt my 08 blade though...... |

Hang in there.
The bad thing with foot injuries is as you get older they will come back to haunt you as I'm finding out now. Do what the doctor says and "Do Not Rush It" no matter how bored you get. |

Will the plates, pins, screws ect. set off the metal detectors at the airport? That would make flying kind of a pain in the @r$e.

Do what the doctor says and "Do Not Rush It" no matter how bored you get. | If you're lucky, this will not end up being the case for you. I had my foot ripped out of the socket with a corresponding Fib. break in May of '95. It took a few surgeries to get it back to "pretty close to right." The two doctors who worked on it both guaranteed me that it would give me a lot of trouble later in life. I'm not sure when that is supposed to be though. I'm banging on the back door of 50 years old right now and it's been over 13 years since the injury. It doesn't give me any trouble at all now. Of course the first five or so years it sure did!
Hope your heals as well. |

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... I really dont want to sound mean and horrible but I hope that some peeps read this and realise the importance of good gear. When we buy a bike that cost £1ooos surely we should budget for the right gear to protect us. The serious injuries that ocour will stay with us for the rest of our lives and I dont think people think that way, it only takes one mistake for this to happen. As I have said before my accident a month ago would have resulted in terrible injuries (if not fatal) without the good gear I was wearing.
So I hope this thread is a good lesson to peeps that arnt wearing it ATM

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... I second what setanta says about hoping this hits home with some of us about the need to wear good, protective gear when riding. It is easy to make excuses for not doing it, such as "it's too hot", or "it's too expensive", but the expense sure can pay for itself over and over again if it saves recovery time and pain. I paid the price many moons ago when riding in shorts and sneakers - ran into the back of a turning pickup truck that I thought was turning right, when it was turning left. The pickup pumped his brakes, so both lights must have flashed, but I picked up on the wrong one and swung left to go around when he turned in front of me. That one caused a severed patella tendon (knee) and a long, painful recovery process that would most likely have been much less severe if I had just worn a pair of jeans.
Good luck on your speedy recovery. |

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... For the record mine wasn't from a crash.
Got knocked off a ladder and fell about 10' and landed on my heel. It's called the calcaneus bone. The doctor said it's one of the hardest bones in the body and one of the hardest to break. He also said 40 to 50 years ago it was a career ending injury but with the technology of today they were able to put it back together. I did a lot of research on it and to this day I've read of people having to have a foot amputated due to the injury.
I am thankful that I've been able to recover as much as I have. |

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... Your right about the gear- i used to ride in a T and jeans, till i saw a bike accident where the poor rider wasnt wearing any protective gear...... i was wearing fully armoured protective jacket and trousers, and the paramedic who attended the scene ( and subsequently cut it all off of me! ) said it had saved me horrific injuries, and that a lot of RTA's involving bikes had riders in T's and shorts/jeans. Everybody has freedom of choice, and i wouldnt like to tell people what to do, but it does make sense to wear protective gear. I have had friends tell me that the plates do set off metal detectors... perhaps someone has experience of this??!!? |

(Another long story.) I don't set metal detectors off. |

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... Hi Jazzy, thanks for asking......my doc said i wouldnt walk for six months which is a downer, but i have an inflateable plastic boot which at least i can walk short distances on without my crutches. Im going out of my mind with cabin fever though, just sitting around the house doing nothing- im quite an active person usually, i like the gym ( no heavy squatting anymore!!! ) and walking with my son and stuff so its killing me being lazy!!!!! Who would have thought it? I usually havent got enough hours in the day, now theres too many. |

| Re: Crashed bike, Smashed ankle.... hi sorry to hear about your injury.i did the same to my left ankle about four years ago.fib tib heel and dislocation, the pain when the doctors(four of them)relocated the joint can only be imagined, anyhow i thought the doc was shitting me when he said it would be six months before walking but he was correct.doc also said no harm in trying to hurry it along but that nothing but time would work.again correct. two years attending fracture clinic before discharge, and more surgery to remove screws and plate from outside of ankle(screws hit and rubbed everything) and all because of a jet ski(bloody f*****g things, stick to bikes in future).you will not jump off things, run, kick football again. mind you i never jumped, run or kicked football before this.i must say though when i looked down at my ankle i thought i would loose my foot, so must thank docs and surgens at belfast royal victoria hospital for a top job.morphine is great stuff aint it. good luck with your recovery and take your time. stephen |
