| Black ice is not an alcopop drunk by underage teenagers.... with a combination of this lovely sub-zero weather we are having in the UK, and a bit of water, i managed to drop my 2008 blade twice this morning on the way to work
haven't had a spill in about 10 years, but as soon as my bike hit the ice, it was a goner,
first spill, it started sliding sideways, put my feet down my feet hit the ice and my baby and i went down together... picked her up, and continued my journey...
came off the M4 J6 down to the round about, must have banked her over at about 1 degree and she went straight down agian...
take my word for it, bikes are not good for ice skating!
ride safe everyone!! |

| Re: Black ice is not an alcopop drunk by underage teenagers.... I managed to lock both front wheel, back wheel and have both my feet skating on the ground trying to stop yesterday. Not a fun feeling believe me!
I even had a little mis-hap when turning (the road was bending) yet she still continued to go forward (scared the crap out of me..!)
All of the snow has turned to ice, and looking at the weather forecast I doubt it will melt.
Hope your ok!

oh well guess i have a few months to get her back to her former glory before the "summer"...
got a quote from Honda, was expecting the fairings to be a bit more, both left and right will be £300, which is what my excess is anyway, so i wont be making a claim... |

| Re: Black ice is not an alcopop drunk by underage teenagers.... We had some bad weather here in the NW but it is gone for now and this last saturday went for a spin. Stil have to watch out for potholes I swear some are just huge It put the avoidance skill to work It was a bit brisk out but in all enjoy the ride. If we get the rain with ice I wont be riding I will be driving my jeep. I rather be driving not sliding on my bike. |

It hurts when you have to lift her up from the ground. I know how you feel.
Don't worry, its not a little bit of elbow grease wont fix. Note to self: Stay away from ice.

| Re: Black ice is not an alcopop drunk by underage teenagers.... Glad you are all right. I hope this serves as a lesson for other riders who are a bit too eager to ride during the winter. Although I don't quite understand why anyone would ride a race bike with race tires in below-freezing temps. I can't get any traction in my 101HP Audi A3 with 4 wheels let alone even consider being on 2. I'm not knocking you at all, as I see other people do the winter riding also. I just don't understand why... |

I just don't understand why... | This is my second winter of riding.. I learned to ride in May 2007 and passed my test in February 2008.. and I will ride every day I can all year round.. the only thing which will stop me is snow on the ground and so far this winter I have only looked out the window and said 'Not today' once..
SSB and I don't own a car, my bike is my only transport, and while I know I could walk to town or the shops to get the bits I need, where the heck is the fun in that? I love riding my bike, no matter what the weather is, and will keep on doing it..
If the weather is cold I slow right down, I always ride to the conditions outside, and I always make sure I leave plenty of room between other vehicles round me so I have more than enough room to stop.. I am constantly alert to the road conditions and the temperature and ride carefully..
As far as the cold goes, the only part of me which gets cold is my hands, I am wrapped up so well.. I actually like riding when its cold, the air is so crisp and clear its lovely..
The upshot of this is I will keep riding.. I'm just more careful when I do.. |

Oh, and an old winter hack sounds good. Look at getting something like a CB500 (and add crash bars etc just in case) or a GPZ500 (Good Commuter bikes)

I have him on video in my old mobile out in the garden running round like an idiot in all the white stuff.. He thought it was wonderful, until we walked him in it and it all stuck to his legs |

I'd say cb500 that way you get the honda build quality even for a hack.
Normally I would ride right through the winter, but not this year.
I havn't been feeling like riding the bike, then again i've been working on the bikes though, so they are gonna be ready for the spring.
She's been locked up in the garage, keeping warm while I use the cage. |

| Re: Black ice is not an alcopop drunk by underage teenagers.... That snow storm was Patch's first encounter with snow. He was scooting up and down the garden trying to catch all the snow. (he wasn't paying attention to any of the surroundings = kept bumping into things)
The CB500 are good bikes, I've seen many with at least 40k-50k miles on them - and they still run strong with TLC. I have a GPZ500 with 8k miles on it. Had to replace the rear shock and front down pipes but other than that she runs a dream.
Psst Loopy - Your approaching 4000 Posts... Whats the W word I'm looking for?

If you can, save up a few bob and get a spares/repair one - would be a good project for you (and would keep you sane)
