Turns over but wont start

I hoping that someone can help me here!

I have a 99 R1 and it is not starting. The battery is at 12.25 volts. When i go to start it will turn but not start up. Shortly after a few attemps the battery on the R1 is drained and it wont even turn. I try to jump start the bike with my truck and it will start ONLY WHEN I START MY TRUCK UP AND THE TRUCK IS RUNNING.

Also, to add to the confussion, this has always happened, when i connect my battery the tachometer needle, the needle will turn on and rise to 8000 RPMs then shut off. (Thats with the motorcycle not turned off, is that normal). Then when the bike is running just the tachometer needle will show the correct rpm for one second, then show 0 rpms for one second (as if it shuts off), and the needle will jump to 8000 rpms for one second but the engine will not increase power, just the needle moves. This is a continuous cycle throughout any ride.

Does it have a shift light?Sound like a electrical problem..Sorry I couldnt help more..

Yamaha are known to have issues with their tachometers and false readings.
