It's new to me!

I was fortunate enough to acquire a VERY used R6 for free this Christmas. It's going to be my little project to get this thing back up and running for use as a track mount, but, being a Honda guy, I've got lots of questions.

The bike was obviously stolen at some point, as the VIN has been ground off of the stearing stem. I know that on my Hondas, the VIN can be located in other areas on the bike. Does anyone know where else I can look for a VIN number on the R6? I'm trying to discern what year the bike is, an '01 or '02.

I see posts mentioning a problem with second gear. Could someone give me some more info about this? I'm thinking the clutch is fried, judging from the melted rubber on the shock, so I'll be inside the gearbox more than likely. Anything I should be looking for?

I also see mention of electrical issues. Are they common, and if so, what are they?

Of course, the .org rocks for info on my 'Blade, but does anyone know of any other good websites relating to Yamaha's, or more specifically, the R6? How about a place to source discount parts, similar to Service Honda?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wait a minute, here. Perhaps you should clarify that this bike isn't HOT.
Stolen property is not popular with fireblades and stolen bikes are not popular with any biker.

Most trackday orgs will check a bike for ground off numbers and not allow it on the track.

Make sure it's not a hot bike.

Because the VIN is no longer on there doesn't mean its stolen. My bike came from AZ and while it was down there it got totaled. Well to get it back on the road again they had to rebuild it and put it under a different VIN Assigned by the state of AZ. So while most of my VINs are shaved off (all the factory ones actually), I have a new VIN Sticker on the frame from the state of AZ. My suggestion, pull off all that plastic and hope that you find some kind of VIN somewhere!!!
Otherwise, never mention your little problem again, it can just be your little secret
