| Re: 4 FJRs crash over the weekend This is the one we passed. The explaination matched the scene well. Glad no one was hurt. We met this guy with the rear-facing camera on Push mountain later on Sunday. Quote LiquidSilver

Yo, Gents. Can I have that soapbox? Thanks, I promise I'll give it back.
Never posted here before.
Strat - I gotta quibble with you on the details, here.
I saw both accidents on Saturday, one right in front of me, and the other when I got home and reviewed the rear-facing helmet cam.
Les (the most severe crash) did not, I repeat DID NOT overcook that corner. He was following Wayne B. from Beaumont at a very sane pace on a technical piece of road. I was making my own fun by hugging the white line on the inside of the corner he crashed in, THAT'S how sane the pace was.
The sudden appearance of a steep cliff beside the road helped some erroneous information fly into his brain that told him he was into the corner too fast, and with that erroneous information, he made a choice. He chose to give up on the steering capabilities of his bike and trust his brakes. It was a totally common standup and runoff accident. From what I'm understanding, all of the incidents were standup and runoffs. Arkansas twisties can be very technical and there's everything from long sweepers to 1st gear canyon corners. And the experience level of FJR owners is SO INCREDIBLY VARIED. Some guys off GoldWings, and others off R1s... and nobody takes the speeches seriously when people say, 'RIDE YOUR OWN PACE.'
The second I witnessed was behind me on Arkansas' famous Push Mountain Road. All the rear-facing camera got was two guys riding together, one in the turn, and the other going straight.
I've ridden many of these same roads in the rain at similar paces to what two of the accident victims were riding in the dry and clear, so there's NO WAY they were even close to the limits of adhesion and lean angle. And unless you've flown into a HUGE gravel patch, the bike will come back from the skid just fine... just STAY IN THE CURVE no matter what your brain says.
Please remember guys, once you're in that curve, you've already bought and paid for it... YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT. Hard braking is NOT AN OPTION. This type of crash is SO COMMON. You have to consider going into the other lane or off the road as VERY POTENTIALLY FATAL. DON'T GIVE UP! Lean into it... the FJR will stick a curve that'll make your head spin. Now if the bike doesn't make it, chances are you've low-sided and you're behind the bike, the best way to go down in this circumstance.
Thanks for the box, see ya. |
