Nephew's Blaster

I realize that this is not the site for ATV's but wanted to share a good picture and ask a question. My nephew was complaining about low compression on his Blaster (2 Stroke). Would not even start anymore. I thought a simple ring change would fix it. Tore the bike down and found that the skirt on the exhaust side of the piston was missing. Picture below. No sign of damage to the cylinder wall. Any ideas how the piston skirt can crack? The nephew is 17 so I am sure running the s*** out of this is a likely contributor. Thanks
