The 2009 BMW X5 is a midsize SUV which will be offered in two models. Though an SUV, BMW X5 delivers a sports sedan performance with a fantastic balance and grip. With a fuel economy of EPA highway 21 mpg and EPA city 15mpg, strong breaking and excellent pedal feel, BMW X5 is the “most family oriented vehicle BMW has developed and built”, according to critics. The standard seating is for 5 persons with an optional 3rd row to seat an extra two persons.
The two models to be offered are – the 3.0si with a 260-hp 3.0-liter 6 cylinder engine and the 4.8i with a 350-hp 4.8-liter V8 engine. Both engines require premium-grade fuel. Both come with automatic transmission, just like in the 2008 version. BMW was the first automobile manufacturer to produce V8 engines, and the 2009 X5 boasts of a state-of –the-art engine cooling system that changes according to the engine’s requirement.
Like the previous X5 models, the 2009 version also has the all-wheel drive without low-range gearing and the confusing iDrive that uses a single knob to control navigation, entertainment, communication. Fortunately audio and climate functions have been separated from the iDrive system. Along with the standard available safety features like front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover the first two seating rows, the 2009 version comes with ABS, traction control, antiskid system with rollover sensors and hill descent control, according to the Consumer Guide automotive.
Active steering and steering-linked xenon headlights, DVD entertainment, rearview camera with front/rear obstacle detection and the BMW’s assist concierge service with wireless cell phone link are some of the other features that distinguishes the 2009 model. The new version carries over several distinctive features of the previous models known for their superior on-road performance with its extremely plush interiors. It also has more cargo room.
While ranking “good” in performance, exterior and interior, top reviewers have always given an “excellent” to the safety standards offered by BMW. The 2009 version is also expected to do well in the crash tests and is likely to be the top safety pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to reviewers.
“All in all, we found this big vehicle to be a pleasure to drive with excellent road manners – one of the best sport utilities that we have driven”, according to a review in Market Watch.
