I was just over getting a quote for insurance for my '03 954 and when I went out to copy the vin# down, I noticed at the bottom of the tag is this CBR900RR.  Found this curious, is it because the 954 is part of the 900 'line' ?  Your thoughts?.

ND4SPDSHO : Insurance companies still consider it a 900cc bike, which helps keep the insurance cost down
I don't know if it's got anything to do with insurance rates. There are lots of bikes out there with model numbers suggestive of higher displacement than the motor really offers.

For instance...

the YZF-R1000 really displaces 998cc's.
the GSX1300R really displaces 1299cc's.
the Z1000 really displaces 953cc's.

I bought a 2002 Fireblade and just looked over a service invoice - the description says "CBR900RR2" - what does that mean? is it a 929 or 954?

how do you visually differentiate these models apart?
they might have just screwed up. check out some pics in here for visual reference. the 954 headlight comes up to form sharp points on both sides while the 929 remains flatter all the way around. I think also on the right side of the engine block there should be a number stamped, either 929cc3 or 954cc3

Also, the 954's rear end is tapered to almost a point, the 929 is much wider, more like the 900RR's 'Muscle bike' look. The 954 also only has 2 headlights with space seperating them while the 929 has 3 headlights in a single housing, the middle being the low beam, the 2 outside lights being high beam.

I have 3 lights in my 954, as does the service manual. I know for a fact cause I replaced all 3 W/Sylvania White's. You must have that Left Coast version W/2 in yours :idunno:
Oh & my 929 had 3 too

I have nationwide insurance and I told them that it was a 954 not a 900 and they checked their DO NOT INSURE binder and found cbr900rr on the list but not the 954. I would go with telling them it is a 954 because if I told them it was a 900 they wouldn't insure me. My only guess is that they have many more accidents to relate to the 900 than the 954 :twocents:

This is how the various model years are referred to in Europe (and possibly Japan):

CBR1000RR4, CBR1000RR5 are the current 2004-05 model
CBR900RR2, RR3 are 954's 2002-03
CBR900RRY, RR1 are 929's 2000-01
RRT, RRV, RRW, RRX are the 918cc models 1996-99
RRN, RRP, RRR (!) and RRS are the 893cc models 1992-95

And the CBR600's (this is where it gets confusing)
CBR600RR3, RR4, RR5 are obviously the RR models 2003-05
CBR600FS1, FS2 are the CBR600F Sport models 2001-02
CBR600FX, FY, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 are F4i's 1999-2005
CBR600FS, FT, FV, FW are F3's 1995-98
CBR600FM, FN, FP, FR are F2's 1991-94
CBR600FH, FJ, FK, FL are F1's 1987-90

Probably a little more than you wanted to know...
