I need some advice!

I was invited to go on a bike ride, but I am feeling kinda uncomfortable about it! First of all not about riding with a group, just about riding with people that will and probably are going to act stupid. I used to think that was all cool and now that is like a total turn off to me. I really don't know what to do? My cousin and her boyfriend want me to go, and I don't want to say no. I just can't see it happening though! What should I do?

Re: I need some advice!

Only ride with people that you know well, don't ride with people you don't know unless someone that you already know can vouch. A careless rider could cost someone their bike or their life. Or if you feel everything is alright and want to be cautious, ride in the very back, and keep some distance between you and the next bike in front of you. In this sport, it's better to be uncomfortable and not go, than taking chances.

Thats what I had mention to my cousin, I want to ride in the back, but they are talking about 80 bikes. I just can't see this happening right now, I need to be riding a little longer.

Re: I need some advice!

If you are uncomfortable I say skip it. If you are nervous about the way these others might conduct themselves you'll have a hard time concentrating your efforts on your ride. If you really feel obligated and decide to go take up a position at the rear and give yourself a good space between the next rider.

Another great site to visit.

Re: I need some advice!

If your spidery sense is telling you not to go...then listen to it. Stick to the solo and small group rides until you are willing to dodge 80 odd people.

I've found that riding in a group you tend to get pushed closer to your limits sooner and run a high risk of going over your limits. Thatís not to mention, people who are comfortable to ride in close quarters while you are begging for your space, or the fact that there are 80 other road users that are all doing their own thing, many of which could be completely unpredictable.

Don't ever feel obliged to go a on a ride, remember its all about fun, if you are uncomfortable with that many riders then you probably won't have much fun. Perhaps see if you can convince your cousin that you'd prefer the three of you to go off in another direction from the big group, or take a rain check and go for a spin solo.

Edit: or see if anyone on the .org from your area wants to go for casual spin.

Edit Mk II: It's early days, plenty of time for you to work up to those types of rides.

Re: I need some advice!

Hi CBRbikerchick. I can understand where you're coming from. I am a new rider and really wanted to ride w/Symonjester, CBRJack and another non .org'er today (twisties up by the lake), but I knew I wasn't ready. My advice to you is...if you are at all uncomfortable with it - don't go.

Do unto others, before some prick does it to you!

Re: I need some advice!

80 people? And many of them who will be doing stupid things? I've been riding over 20 years and I won't go on rides with that big a group. I keep my group riding to a few friends who's skills I know and trust. Listen to you intuition. The best thing, as others have mentioned, is to do solo rides and rides with one or two others that you trust and who will slow down to a pace that's comfortable for you when they ride with you.

Re: I need some advice!

Listen to your instincts. I would never personally ride around 80 other people...the risks of one person doing something stupid and wiping out a bunch of others is too great. I've made one attempt at a group ride (about 30 people) and left as soon as everyone started to run a red light to keep the group together. I knew then that it just was not my idea of having fun on the bike.

Unfortunatly for you, it sounds like you are somewhat tied to this type of riding due to your boyfriend and cousin. That's going to make it all the more difficult to say "no" or come up with some reason not to go (if that is what you choose to do). Good luck...your going to have to really stand up for yourself and decide what you want out of motorcycling. It can be the most rewarding and most devistating sport...sometimes both in the same day. Choose wisely....there is never a guarantee of a "second chance" on a motorcycle.

Edit: Sorry, cousin and "her" boyfriend...still difficult because of the personal ties.

Re: I need some advice!

Unless this is a Hardley parade through town on blocked off roads with police escort for a local holiday, DON'T DO IT. (Even if it was, I wouldn't recommend it.)

80 Even half that

The largest group I am comfortable with is 4. And only if I know their riding habits well. My personal feeling is an ideal group ride has only two bikes!

The others have given very good advice. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, and a grasp of reality and common sense. Follow your feelings on this.

It would carry even more weight if the cousin and her bf were from stuntlife.com.

You might as well say that they are! www.sportbikehype.com! This is the first question that I had asked. What kind of stupid **** are they going to be doing. Then he's like I will show you are site. Yeah ok that is when I decided not to go!

Re: I need some advice!

Yeah, the ride I was talking about with the 30 some odd riders was alot of SBH folks. It's the ride that leaves from River Legacy. I tried it once and realized that it was going to be as stupid as I thought it would be...so I split.

In all fairness though, SBH does keep most of the stunting stuff off the street and does try to offer trackdays (term loosely used). But I still wouldn't go within miles of one of their get togethers...but that's just me. I'm more of the "ride with 2 or 3 very well known riders" type of person.

Do what you like, but follow your instincts.
