worries about bike buying on ebay

anyone else kind of hesitant to buy a bike on ebay without ever seeing it in person and just having to go on what the seller says about it (and maybe some pics). I bought my first bike on ebay but it was only $1500 and it was in NH so I coulda said no before actually handing over the money. I'm looking for a new bike and ebay has a lot of bikes that seem like decent deals but I don't know about buying something for a few grand before seeing it. Anyone else have these worries?

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

I sold my bike on Ebay and someone bought it without seeing it in person. I don't know if I could spend a few grand without seeing what I am buying.

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

I purchased my 600RR without ever seeing it. Of course, it wasn't eBay where it is easy to get scammed, I spoke with the guy on the phone and through email a few times first, plus I had a good set of eyes locally go check it out as well.
See if someone on the .org is somewhat local and is willing to go peek at it for you.

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

Make sure its legit by asking the seller for the VIN number, their name and address and the number to the local police department.

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

I have purchased 4 bikes off ebay and sold 1 but I only buy bikes on there that i can check out before closing the deal and handing over my cash. I did sell my bike to a guy who paid me and then i went to forward air and strapped it into a crate for him (he did pay all shipping related costs)

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

  1. Send seller an email. Ask questions, see if they respond.
  2. Ask for a phone number. Legit sellers will give you a # and be willing to talk to you.
  3. Ask for specific or more varied photos of the bike. Ask them to buy a recent newspaper and have them take a pic of the paper (with the Date showing) on the bike.
  4. Check their feedback. This is not always a sure thing as they might be new to eBay and not have much if any. Also, scammers tend to target people with good feedback and try to steal those accounts. If somebody has four gazillion positive feedbacks and they're all napkin holders, chances are they won't be selling a motorcycle out of the blue with that account.
  5. Only pay using a BANK TO BANK wire transfer NOT WESTERN UNION! Or with a certified cashiers check or through Paypal. USPS money orders are ok as well.
  6. See if there are any .org members in the area that could go look at it for you.
  7. If you are still uncomfortable after doing all this, don't buy it and stop looking on eBay for a bike. It's not for you.

I think that guy is relatively close too. I wonder if he knows about any 929s (I'm least interested in the yellow/black ones but a good deal is a good deal) and 02+ RC51s.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Not at the moment he doesn't. I have a really nice 636, though.

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

I bought my 929 (now sold) on ebay, but I didn't send any money. I made sure that he was close enough for me to drive there. I won the auction on a Thursday and drove to Alabama on Saturday with my truck and $5000 cash in hand. If the bike had not been worth it, I would have walked away. It turns out that it was worth it. I rode the bike for 2 years (2003-2005) and sold it for $5500 ($500 more than I paid for it). The seller was being deployed by the USAF to Japan and he had to sell all of his toys...fast! I rode the bike 2 years and made $500, which was more than the cost of the set of Pilot Powers I put on it!

Re: worries about bike buying on ebay

I've bought and sold a few bikes on ebay, but the only one that was sight unseen was the RC45. It was too good to pass up, and I emailed and spoke with the seller several times before sending anything. Then, I sent a deposit. He overnighted me the signed title and keys. I then sent him the balance, and paid for the shipping myself. It did work out ok, but I normally drive to fetch something I'm buying. But I'm in IL and the RC was in Cali, and I didn't want to drive that far.
