KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

Hi Folks,

I am hearing a knocking sound on my '03 954. It is only evident when started cold i.e. for the first time in maybe 12 hours. When the bike heats up the noise simply goes as it does when I pull in the clutch.

I gues it could be one of the following 3:

1)The oil taking it's time to circulate (probably not likely as this should not take more than 10 secs)

2) Worn or damaged clutch basked (again probably not likely as it wouldn't simply go away.

3) The engine is simply heating up and all the smaller, moving components are expanding to fit their particular "homes" thus eliminating the knocking sound.

I feel the latter is probably the most plausible, and while I do not think it's a serious issue it is really annoying not being able to pin point what it is.

Any info, advice etc etc would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

its a combination of 1 and 2.

Topping up some oil, as close to the max as possible, should help a little.

nothing to worry about.

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

I sometimes have that, but the knocking isnt too loud. The 954RRs are always said to be noisey as they have very thin engine casings etc.

I seem to have he usual tapping on cold mornings, once warmed up it just seems to disapear. Im not too fused about it but if its bothering you or if its very loud, then i would get it checked out (i would tear it down myself)

Whats the mileage/kms on the RR3? Mine has done 19000miles

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

I had that knocking sound on my 02 954. I took it to the dealer and they told me not to worry about it. I didn't worry about it for 2 years. Now I don't have to hear it anymore as I have traded it for an 08 1000RR

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

I have a Barnett clutch on my 929 and it knocks like a dry clutch until it warms up. The explanation given to me by the previous owner who installed the Barnett was that the plates rattle when cold because they are slightly tensioned or dished in manufacture so that they straighten out and become perfectly flat after they expand from the heat. My clutch knock disappears when the bike warms up for about a minute - It gives no problems at all.

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

I have heard about this problem before and got in touch with a tech guru at Honda. The Blade has an automatic cam chain tensioner and this can become slightly slack when the bike is not running therefore when you start the bike cold it will take a few cycles for the cam chain to be automatically adjusted, and a knocking sound can be heard that will dissapear as the bike warms up.
He said its nothing to worry about.
Hope this helps.

Re: KNOCKING SOUND ON CBR 954

one of my 900rr's had this sound it was getting heavier and distinct from the right side I've checked the cam chain tensioner it was fine went down to the clutch the basket was a bit worn so guess that was it and since it went away with the clutch pulled in I would say it's a worn clutch basket
