Dogs are those nipples sticking out of the gear. The slots are who knows what they call it? Forks take the beating, one misses a gear. So you have a possible bent fork. They should not have one mark on it. Should not show a one half moon carving on the body. And at that body part of the fork, there should be no heat burn having the color of blue burnt steel at certain areas.
This is where turtle theory comes in. Rub both hands together real fast, which palm stayed cold? So part for part, there is something called even wear. Where you change gears as a set and any bent fork found with a mark on it, nick, I don't care it's now bent junk, no dog ears left, no slot to hold and old dog ear? Wanna split the cases for a 3rd time?
