Cbr shutting down then lights turned on or fan kicks in.

Well decided today to go for a nice ride along the coast bike was running great no problems then out of the blue the bike died all lights worked fine but not enough power to turn the engine (start to turn then just tick)

I could bump start the bike and would idle and ride fine but would die soon as i turned the lights then i would have to bump the bike again to start (with lights off) then while trying to get home the radiator fan kicked in and that also killed then bike.

Bike runs fine when i get it running again after bumping it execpt for the headlights and fan.

Is this the regulator or more likly stator?

Bike- CBR 600 f3 1996

Re: Cbr shutting down then lights turned on or fan kicks in.

ok found some more info the stator is ment to have a small amount of oil, I have the manual but dont understand it very well ive dont a resistance check on the stator ( all 3 yello wires to the earth) and i get nothing at all my multi meter doesnt even twitch. Is it a dead stator?

If you are sure you tested it correctly and get 0 resistance , then time to replace it. Same thing happened to my friend. Bike shut off while riding amd had a bad stator.

Re: Cbr shutting down then lights turned on or fan kicks in.

You need a specific amount of voltage to keep the bike running. Whem the stator fails, you are either barely charging the battery or not at all. So when accessories are turned on, its drawing more voltage than your charging system/battery can handle causing it to shut off. Thats why you bump start it cause you dont have enough voltage to turn the starter over. Usually this is caused by either a bad stator, electrical problem, or dead battery. If it was electrical I would suspect different problems like not starting at all. You can start the bike and put the meter on the battery to see if its charging or not.

Re: Cbr shutting down then lights turned on or fan kicks in.

i put the multi meter on the battery (i charged the battery fully of the bike) it was around 12.8v turned off stayed at around that idle (bike would start with charged battery lights on or off) with the bike running with no lights it slowly went up by 0.1 every 5 seconds but soon as i turned the lights on it drop by 0.1v every second.

Would it be a good idea to just replace the stator and r/r just to be safe as the battery seems to be fine its holding a charge.
Ive only had the bike about 3 months and the previous owner from what i could tell did no maintance to it at all just what it need to pass the mot.

Re: Cbr shutting down then lights turned on or fan kicks in.

i have no idea it doesnt look to old. Friend just helped me check to see if any power is coming from the stator, using the link you sent Twitch and connecting the yellow wires ( 1to2 2to3 1to3 ) with the bike running shows no power coming from the stator, thats if i have done in correctly which i belive i have
