backfire

1998 cbr600f3, carbs are spot on, have tried different coils, wires, cdi, plugs of coarse. bike has diminishing spark, fouls plugs
and backfires, what does anyone think? Bad stator? Ideas.

Re: backfire

Backfiring is caused by a lot of different issues. Most of which are mechanical not electrical. Before you go replacing expensive charging parts let’s look at some of the more common causes. First is it backfiring out the can or through the carbs? What does it sound like, Is this a pre-ignition issue caused by carbon build up? When was the last time you had the valves adjusted? And have you tried a compression test? Is caused by poor valve adjustment or burnt valve? Fouled plugs are caused by a few different things. Is it running lean or rich is it caused by oil or coolant. All look very different, if you are not sure put up some pic’s. give us some more information to go on.there is a lot of great information here but we need more than a 2 sentence description to help you out.

Re: backfire

So going by what you said, all the components involved with carrying the spark have been replaced.

Aside from everything that Rikk mentioned, have you checked and tested the ignition rotor and sensor?

Diminishing spark is a hard ball to chase. Generally, as you may already know, these bikes had pretty good ignition set ups. Itís the charging system that usually fails, but that doesnít have anything to do with your issue, unless you battery is constantly flat or weak.

What does the spark look like when a plug is grounded? How long does it take for the plugs to eventually foul? And MOST IMPORTANTLY, what makes you believe the carbs are spot on?

Weíre they recently cleaned? Rebuilt? Jetted? The more info we have, the better advice we can supply.

Re: backfire

first off I've been doing this for 40 yrs, however I'm a v twin quy. compression is 160 across the board. I rebuilt the carbs, pressure tested seats and synchronized, all good. what I dont like is the spark sometimes being strong and other times barely visible. the backfire is through the exhaust. fresh plugs it will run great for a little while and then boom. plugs are not heavily discolored or sooted,

With what you have offered I can only make a suggestion. I chased a similar spark issue on my 900. Got fed up with the 18 year old coils and bought a coil on plug set up from a 2007 600RR. No more dying spark. It was realatively inexpensive, and a straight forward install. I just didnít feel like buying more 18 year old components and never know if they were gonna fail hours later. A suggestion anyway.
