Three Bond 1207B

I'm making progress on the clutch job on my wife F4i and I look forward to her being able to ride it soon. I'm waiting on my new torque wrench so that I can apply 12nm to the clutch springs.

Since I'm at a waiting step and I took the cover off long ago my memory is a bit fuzzy on what goes where. But over the years, I've relied on my Haynes manual for wrenching on this bike over the last 13-14 years. Some prefer the Honda Service Manual but it is what it is and right now I don't know where I saved the .pdf version I had (probably on a CD in my stash), but I did find the .pdf for the F4. I was going to delete it but someone may need it sometime in the future.

At any rate, the Haynes calls for Three Bond 1207B to seal the clutch cover. However, I purchased a Cometic gasket along with the EBC clutch kit. The manual doesn't call for a gasket of any type. Should I simply use the gasket or use the sealant and use both? Additionally, I'm having a tough time finding out what's the equivalent product for a brand like Permatex which I can readily get at retail. Anyone know where to find the cross-reference?

Re: Three Bond 1207B

Three Bond can handle up to 320C (608F). I figure that if the engine ever sees that type of temperature then I've got bigger problems.

I'm wondering if this product from Permatex should be fine, which is designed to handle up to 400F. I'm also thinking that I should use the Permatex to help hold the gasket in place and seal against any porous tendencies.

But I'm no expert which is why I come here.

Re: Three Bond 1207B

My bikes were made prior to the “tight tolerance”, “no gasket” phase of production, so I’ve always had gaskets readily available. No guarantee with the EBC that it won’t leak, but even with the Honda gaskets, there are 2 areas on the case and case cover that you do apply a very small amount of HONDABOND (where the case halves meet, and on the rubber gasket for the ignition rotor). Now, Hondabond is obviously a chemical specifically made and distributed by Honda, so if a dealer is not close to you, or ordering online is a hassle, it’s typically not an option. It’s also very “runny” and leaves “silk strings” all over your work and fingers lol, but damn, the stuff has never leaked on me between engine case halves, clutch covers, cylinder head covers, ignition covers, stator covers, etc on multiple CBR’s.

That being said when I put my stator cover on my 99 after having the case half welded/repaired I was advised to use Permatex Ultra Black by a very trusted motorcycle/auto mechanic. I did, and no leaks. Readily available at any auto parts store.

I don’t see any harm in using the gasket, with the aforementioned areas dabbed with a bit of sealant. Worst case scenario is you have to take the cover off, remove the gasket and use the rest of the tube to seal the cover.

Looks like the last time I did something like this I used Permatex 29132. I should have some around...just gotta find it (LoL).

Re: Three Bond 1207B

hondabond is what i used on my stator cover where the cases split like ian mentioned. its sticky as f, so it does do a great job holding the gasket where it needs to be. a little goes a long way.

ive heard people putting gaskets in where they werent oem, but i really have no idea in this case paticularly. i guess if it was a huge no-no, why would they even make them?

Re: Three Bond 1207B

I noted that there is no gasket on the microfiche.

I used the gasket along with the Permatex 29132 I had previously used on the Fireblade's covers. Unfortunately in the months that it had been lying on the garage floor, one bolt grew legs and walked away from the other 12. And it was too late to add it to the parts order that I was already waiting for. Won’t prevent me from filling the crankcase with oil as I left the open bolt hole near the 12 o'clock position. I’ll check the torque on the other 12 and fill the crankcase. If I don’t find the bolt before reassembly is complete then I'll order A SINGULAR BOLT from the dealership (at least they won't charge shipping).

That bolt does have a 10mm head, so not far off.
