Replacing Rearsets

Need some help replacing the rearsets on my 4Fi. Removing the two large allen screws is not a problem but I could not remove the long arm connecting the pedal to the shifter lever. It looks like I need to separate the hex nut from the square one (see attached photo), simple enough, but I just couldn’t do it. Should I try harder or am I doing something wrong.
