954 idle problem

Hi again to everybody

The idle speed is 1200 but actually is around 1000. When I startup the bike (sparks are clean) the 4th piston (from right to left) is knocking but this problem happens at low speed and idle. The fuel consumption is ok too. Today, when I was driving , suddenly the rpm came back to 1200 but I don't know how, I was just crossing streets. After a while, the rpm go down to 1000 again.

Help me please, I need to know what's happening.

Re: 954 idle problem

Can't you simply adjust the idle speed?

Turn the idle speed up a little.
And check the vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator.

Re: 954 idle problem

I turned up a little the idle speed but on low speed stills having poor perfomance like without power. I checked the pressure regulator hose but it doesn't have leaks. Or should I remove the hose?

Re: 954 idle problem

the idle speed depends on the temperature of the engine too.

On my NC23, in the cold months, when i start her up in the morning she always idles at 1-1.2K, but after i put on my leathers, my boots, smoke a tab she increases to 1.5+.

If you are having performance issues then there will be a different problem. I thought you were only enquiring about the static idle speed?

Re: 954 idle problem

The bike always has an idle of 1200 rpm on hot or fresh wheater. In the morning the idles gets to 1200 when the engine gets warm but now with 1000 rpm the engine at high temps the pistons stills knocking like they aren't doing effective combustion. I'll check the service manual

Re: 954 idle problem

It is natural for the pistons to "knock" sometimes while the engine is warming up.

This should go away as the oil circulates (reaches top end of motor)

Once the oil gets under the lifters the sound should go away - you can go spend some money and get the lifters adjusted , but not really worth it. Unless the knocking noise you mention is a slight knock and not a heavy knocking sound (almost like a ticking sound )

Re: 954 idle problem

Yeah I know, that always happen when the bike gets warm in the morning. But this sound happens when I try to move the bike, like stopping and go on, and it sounds like a stumble, like not enough power and piston make an extra effort. Also I had to clean the spark plugs, now they are clean but those got fouled to soon. The ignition is ok, I checked the plug wires and ignition coils. About electricity all is well. Also I inspected insulators and intakes and everything is ok. No leaks anywhere.

What would be the problem?

Pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator, turn on the ignition so the pump runs and see if any fuel comes out of the regulator - if it does, you need a new fuel pressure regulator.

Re: 954 idle problem

I checked the FPR, no leaks but I think I found the reason. When I pulled out the vacuum hose off the FPR the rpm come back to 1200. What's problem in tis case: clogged pipe or what???? What does the vacuum hose do connected to the FPR?

Please help me

EDIT: THAT'S NOT CLOGGED PIPES, I INSPECTED THEM. MAYBE THE FPR IS NOT SUPPLING AIR.

The idle increased because it is sucking air through the vacuum line.
Adjust the idle speed.

Just reading back through the thread:
"on low speed stills having poor perfomance like without power."
"with 1000 rpm the engine at high temps the pistons stills knocking"

You aren't trying to accelerate from idle speed are you?
The engine is not going to pull hard from under about 3500rpm.

Re: 954 idle problem

I adjusted the idle speed to 1200 with the throttle screw but stills like I'm saying on previous messages.
