03 CBR 954 CLICKING PROBLEM

I've got an 03 cbr 954 that's making this horrible clicking noise. THe valves have been inspected and are in check, so it's not that. I don't believe it's knocking cuz it's not that loud. I believe it would be louder if it were knocking. It's made this noise ever since I got it in September. I haven't noticed any loss in power. It's still strong and gets up and goes. It's just got progressively louder ever since September. And I can start to hear it at lower speeds while riding. As I climb speeds and rev it the noise speeds up. My mechanic seems to think its something to do with the exhaust. I don't know. Any help will be appreciated a lot!

Cam chain tensioner is most likely bad. Its located behind the right frame rail where you are looking in your video.

Re: 03 CBR 954 CLICKING PROBLEM

So a new cam chain tensioner will solve the noise problem? I have one 954 too and would know about this. I know the CCT is automatic but is there a way to thigten manually or something like that?

I would agree that it's most likely the tensioner.
Have you checked the HTEV is nice and tight? The bushes wear allowing it to rattle around in the housing.
But this sounds fairly regular so I'd be looking at the tensioner.

Re: 03 CBR 954 CLICKING PROBLEM

The HTEV is working ok. It opens at 4000 rpm but I didn't see exactly. I don't have that terrible sound, just on warming and it disappears. It seems to be a lazy tensioner. This happens on motorcycles up to 2003.

I didn't ask if the HTEV was working, I asked whether the bushes that support each end of the shaft are worn.

Re: 03 CBR 954 CLICKING PROBLEM

Well I checked it too. Blade just a question, What's happening with my spark plugs? They are getting fouled quick. I cleaned 'em around 1 month ago and the bike is hesitating on low revs (1000 to 2500 rpm). No leaks on everywhere. The fuel economy is ok too.

I have a new FPR working ok, starter valves synchronized and I checked 'em and they have carbon, not oil. Any idea?

Trying to ride it below 4000rpm is going to foul the plugs. The engine can't breathe enough air to burn all the fuel you're feeding it.

The only time a sports bike should be sat at >2000RMP is at idle or at stop lights.

A few months ago whilst at work the snow came down thick and fast and I did not want to leave my bike at work so I drove her home at 15mph on thick slippery snow so was at very very very low RPMs all the way home (roughly 6miles away) and my poor bike chugged like a steam train all the way home, 2 out of 4 plugs were fouled and needed a good clean as soon as I hit my garage.

Anyone can drive a fast bike, few can drive a bike fast!

Re: 03 CBR 954 CLICKING PROBLEM

I would put my money on the CCT... thats exactly how my bike sounded before i swapped it out for a manual CCT

your cam chain can be in spec but the hydroulic tensioner changes the spring tension wen the bike is off compared to on. you can buy manual CCT's for like 40 bucks

It is not hydraulic, it's just a spring with a rachet to prevent it from backing off the spring.
