1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

Hey guys -

First off, yes i did search for "fairing" or "Plastics" or "Interchangeable" and got nothing....

The project bike I am working on will need all new fairings. I have been searching on the interwebz and found someone that put 2004-2005 CBR1000RR fairings on their 1997 CBR900. I cant find the write up or the build progress so I am curious...

What other Honda fairings will fit my 1997? Is the front fairing with the light in it swap-able from 1998 to 1997 using the 1997 lowers?

Are there any other fairings that anyone knows of that just bolt on or go on with only MINOR modifications??

Thanks a bunch!

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

Not many folks have swapped the fairings over, this guy put 08 fairings on and that a custom tail piece

Used race fairings as they come in two parts so its easyer to extend or move the standard mounting points to fit. I think you could make most race fairings fit like this but you would need some custom made brackets to pick up each mounting hole. You can of course fit 98 cbr plastics, i believe the sides pannels are identical so you could just add a 98 cowl to your 96-97 side pannels

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

I have a 97 and a 98 fireblade...

I want to do a hybrid of the two... I like the Front fairings from the 96-97 best with that cool ass headlight but I dont like the boxy ass end of the 96-97

I want to take the tail section from a 98-99 and put it on there with that tail light too

Also I have seen online where someone with a 97 CBR900 put the 2004-2005 CBR1000RR plastics on

Has anyone here done anything with different plastics/fairings?

This is supposed to be fireblade HQ... someone help me with this question...

Cheers

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

I put an '08 fairing on my '97, not too difficult using a 'race' type GF fairing, cheap too. I had a lot of 'fun' cutting out the headlamp openings but you could use anything you fancy, Lambchops has suggested a couple of round projectors that would make that job a lot easier. I did some cutting and shutting to the belly pan but nothing too extreme and a Dremel makes light work of it.
BUT, although I am a bit pleased that I could make it all look reasonable..... I'm not quite happy with the overall 'look'.
The older 'blades seem to suit the more slab sided fairing designs, I'm probably going to change to an '04 type as and when my enthusiasm level rises again.
Just rumiaging through some old photos, came accross my CB450 outside our local meet, back in 1970, just thought I'd add it for old langs syne

Mght I suggest that that is a perfect photo to return to with each bike you own, or even the same bike every year would make an interesting study :-)

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

For standard panels the lowers and mids from 92-99 fit, the top cowls all fit to the mids but need different clocks and mirror brackets, the inside panels are different 92-97 and 98-99.

It's reasonably easy to fit 929 tailpiece.

Thought about a streetfighter?

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

I have thought about a street fighter but personally I like the look of full fairings on bikes... Most of the time when I see a street fighter I think that it is just a cheap way out.

However there are some SUPER SWEET fighters that I have seen, with way more money and work in to them than it would take to piece together the plastics... however to the untrained eye it can look like someone has a cheap POS bike

jdugen - Do you have more pictures of the bike with the 08 fairings as you put them on? what is it about the '08 plastics that you dont like? Also can you put together a parts list and rough cost estimation for each piece? I am sure it is a bit more evolved than just buying the fairings....

I don't mind no fairings on slower bikes, but anything you're going to ride over about 140kph gets really uncomfortable in my opinion, due to the wind. I've ridden my 929, GSXR's and ZX6R (and others) without fairings and don't enjoy it much, compared to with fairings of course. It's hard not to enjoy riding almost anything, even when it hurts :-)

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

Hi Tupp.
Cost of fairing, glass fibre replica, but, well enough made . 130 + 16p+p. EBay, quite a few on there. The Chinese painted reps look good at about 350 - 450 all in. They too use the simpler construction of all in one panels rather than the OEMs jig-saw puzzle.
Front bracket / hanger. 35, EBay again, a local (UK) supplier but probably Chinese. Indistinguishable from OEM
Headlamp unit 10 + 5 p+p (!) Seem to be a lot round at about 20 - 30.
Mirrors 18 free post. Used these as they have built in indicators. Not much use as mirrors as show more elbow than road. I'm looking around for ones that have a bend in to lower them a bit. Might just go for standard indicators on the front to widen the choice of mirrors.
Some cheap and cheerful decals 5
Had a big can of metalflake black in stock so thats what the bodywork got!
2 bits of ally strip to make up the fairing side mountings.

The only awkward bit was fitting the instruments. I did have a nice looking and small Chinese digital unit fitted, but it turned out to only display kilometers per hour. So, I had some clocks from a previous Honda build that fitted and connected fine, but were a bit too bulky to allow free bar movement. had to do some very judicious cutting and shaping to make them fit. A small digi unit would be my recommendation for ease of fitting.
Hope this helps

Cheers

I'm chasing up fibreglass race fairings just now.
Is that 130 correct? Is that a full kit or just one piece?
I'm looking at close to $1000 for a kit.

Re: 1997 CBR900 - Compatible Fairings??

the 98-99 fairings and lights fit! they look a lot better and work better!!! they cost alot thou!!! you can make the 08 cbr 1000rr race fairings fit, then put the light in!!! I have seen people use evey front you can think of!!! but if you want eazy!!! the 98-99 is the only one that is easy but it's not that easy!!! some info and pic's of other bikes!!! to fit the 99-98 front you need all this stuff

98-99 Headlight
98-99 Center position light
98-99 Fairing stay (you'll have to custom mount your gauges)
98-99 Mirror stay
98-99 mirrors
98-99 dash panels
98-99 windshield
98/99 upper inner radiator shrouds
98-99 lower center V
98-99 lower fairing panels (to mount the center V as it is taller on the 98-99 and meets up with the inner radiator shrouds

As you can see from the list above, none of your 95-97 parts are compatible with the 98-99 model, so this is more involved than when you first came here with your idea of what it would take. Good on your for asking the questions first before you attempt this conversion. It's not that hard to do, but you need the right parts.

you may all so want to change the tail too a gsxr tail looks good!!! so do the 929 and 954 tails! you can do those one's with your sub frame!!! made to fit!
