Stator replacement

So I went to replace my stator because my new batter went dead after one ride, and after I took the fairings off, the next step is to disconnect the white connector by the battery. The three prongs on the male side connector had one of them black and the plastic was partially melted. I'm thinking this is the problem with the battery and stator. What would this be caused by?

Re: Stator replacement

I would guess it is caused by a bad connection due to dirt and or corrosion between two of the pins. Such a bad connection will have increased resistivity and cause increased power dissipation and temperature.

It might possibly also be caused be a faulty stator causing excessive current flow in one of the 3 wires but I do not have sufficient details about the regulator circuitry to say if this is a probable cause. Maybe other on the forum knows?

Re: Stator replacement

Interesting, I'll have to think about that one, I'll have to replace the piece, and figure out how to test if anything else was shorted in the charging system.

Re: Stator replacement

Basically, they all do it, or will be doing it right now. Quite a bit of current flows from alternator to rectifier, any resistance in the connection generates heat, this both burns the connector/s and melts the plastic. Well worth keeping an eye on the connectors general condition and keeping it clean. In the worst cases cutting the connector out and soldering the three wires together gives a reliable repair.

Re: Stator replacement

So you're saying take the plug out completely and solder the wires together. I guess I could get some new connections and solder them on instead.
