929RR Erion,,,, Clutch won't engage

Hey im a new rider and got my hands on a 929 erion off a friend of mine for a good price. Rode all week without any problems but tonght at a red light when i pulled in my clutch to slow down and stop in first gear the engine still had power to the wheels. due to braking i stalled. When i shifted into neutral and re-started the bike i squeezed in the clutch lever and dropped into first and it stalled instantly as if i never grabbed the lever. now when in neutral if i squeeze the lever i hear a rattle in the clutch housing. Any Ideas or Suggestions????? Thanks ...

Adjust the clutch cable perhaps?

Could be a broken clutch actuator rod? The part that sticks out of the clutch cover that the cable attaches to. When you pull in the clutch lever is there any tension or is it very light pull.

Yea. The cable and actuator rod are both operating with tension. I believe the spring is fowled or was thrown. Either way ordered a complete new clutch from honda. It's overdue on a 13 year old bike. Thanks guys.

What spring are you referring to? I would have torn apart the clutch to find the problem before ordering a new clutch. Depending on how many miles are on your bike and how it was ridden I doubt it needed a new clutch. What parts did you order?

My clutch plates were still within spec at 33k miles. The clutch springs were nearly worn out. The outer hub and clutch center were worn and will need to be replaced soon.

I would recommend a new cable since they only cost about $20. Mine was very stiff when I took it off the bike.

I am having the same problem right now on my 929. my bike has not been ridden in a couple years now, I put a fresh battery in and went to take a ride but it stalls as soon as I put it into gear. I have adjusted both lower and upper adjustments properly, had clutch once or twice, thought everything was ok but then stalls out again next time I stop. It acts like a malfunctioning hydraulic clutch, sometimes you have clutch and then you don't.
It functioned fine when parked, and I have 14k on the odometer.
If I may ask, what did you find with your bike? Did the clutch change do it or was there a side line problem?
Thanks,
-Kevin

Put it in gear, pull the clutch lever in and rock the bike back and forth to loosen up the clutch plates, then start the engine.

Are the clutch discs sticking do you think? Thats my thought from sitting.
I have to do an oil change as well, still has old oil, would that cause a problem?
I was thinking do the oil change and take it out for a good ride, hopefully things will loosen up.
I will mess with it tomorrow eve.

That would be my guess.
The oil should be fine.

Re: 929RR Erion,,,, Clutch won't engage

Thanks, I almost tore it down for inspection today but I held back pretty convinced its nothing major. There is no history of clutch issues and has not been beat on.

Turns out with my bike there was a serious problem. When i took apart the clutch I discovered that the small gear that slides in and out behind the basket had ceased. Not only that there are 3 small tits that go into the back of the basket that sheared off from the sliding gear. Had to replace the basket and small gear so i did the complete clutch while i was in there.

I messed with it a little after work, it gave a problem at first, walked it around back and forth while putting pressure off and on to my clutch lever and it fired up in gear clutch engaged and seems good. I'll bet the discs were gummed up from just sitting, similar to a set of brake rotors dragging after a little weather.
I was too wiped out from work to even care about riding tonight but am going to blow it out tomorrow and I'll bet it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your reply, maybe that's why you got a good deal on it, or maybe a freak thing that just happened. Do you have a lot of miles on it?
Sounds like it got pricey after all those parts.

There is no way the previous owner could have forseen this or covered it up. I was on it when it happened. Yea about 600 in parts. Bike is mint now (new sprockets and chains too) so lets hope it stays that way. Good luck with yours.
