954 vs 929 shocks?

Hi everyone,

I bought an accident damaged 954 some time ago and I am in the process of restoring her to her former beauty. I noticed that my bike sits lower on it's front suspension versus my friend's 929. To what I know the 954 and the 929 share the same front suspension and travel distance on the shock? My friend's 929 sits about a whole inch higher. What could cause this?

Thanks,

Jacques.

Forks and shocks are two different things, you are referring to the forks.
Do both bikes have the preload set to the same position?
Are the springs on both bikes OEM?

Sorry, got my terminology wrong, forks yes. Preload is the same, and springs are supposed to be OEM, wont know for sure until I strip the forks down. I was just wondering if anybody encountered anything similar and possibly know what the root cause could be.

Do both bikes have similar mileage?
Do both forks have the same total travel when you lift the weight off the front tyres?

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

did you guys both just get gas??? if not, that could do something too
plus the 929 swingarm is not the same. wonder if that dose anything to how much lbs the front tire takes??? it's pushes the backend up a little bit on my 929 :-) the wheel goes back and down, if your standing at the back of the bike, from stock!

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

Both bikes have roughly the same mileage, and the amount of travel is the same if the front wheel is lifted off the floor, it's just when it is weighted, my 954 sits lower.

Have the forks been moved in the triple tree?

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

nope, haven't been moved, on their standard height. I bought 10W fork oil and a new set of seals, will disassemble the weekend and see what I can learn.

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

Either the 954 has a shorter/softer spring or the 929 has a longer/stiffer spring installed. Really though, if you have the suspension properly dialed in, comparing two different bikes does not matter.

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

They have different forks and springs. I don't know does 929 have progressive springs but the 954 has. If the 929 springs are linear it should sit higher whit same preload.

Re: 954 vs 929 shocks?

I am curious as to how you know the preload is the same between the bikes when the 929 preload adjuster is completely different from the 954. You count the lines on a 929 to set preload and the number of turns in/out on the 954. Springs are the same. If the fork caps are the same then one of the bikes has had the forks changed.

Different lengths also - 954 are 25mm longer from memory.
