929 battery goes flat when running with lights on

Hi there

I've got a 2001 929 and it's just developed a problem whereby if I run it with the lights on the battery goes flat and it won't restart. If I re-charge the battery and run it with lights off it seems OK. Battery is only 18 months old.

Any ideas what it is? Alternator? How can I test it?

thanks

J

Start the bike, run a multimeter across the battery terminals while running. You should get 14.5v.

Another "Honda Charging Problems Thread". Probably more than the battery....a good mechanic can diagnose it and tell you exactly what is wrong. You can gamble and replace the stator, but if it's not the problem and you bought an OEM one, you just might of wasted 300...when the real problem is the regulator rectifier for about 200.

Measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running.
My guess would be the stator has lost a phase.

Re: 929 battery goes flat when running with lights on

Thanks,
I just tested across the battery terminals without the ignition on, 12.3v.
Then tested again, this time with the engine running, 12.2v.

So it looks like there's no charge getting to the battery...

Now measure the AC output of the stator phases.
Then do the tests of the regulator as detailed in the manual.
Either one of these has failed or you have a burnt wire/melted connector/bad connection somewhere.
