Key won't turn ignition

Hey guys, I went out tonight to take a ride and my key wasn't working. It took maybe 30 times of pulling the key out and retrying until it finally worked. It only seems to do this when it's cold out. The colder it gets, the more tries it takes. After I get it though, I can shut the bike off or lock the bars and leave the keys in and be fine. Also, my then signals don't like to stay on in the cold. I have to push the button multiple times for them to work properly. Please help as I don't want to pay out the ass to go to the dealer.

Re: Key won't turn ignition

Does the same thing happen with your spare key?

As for the signals, open the switches up and give em a good cleaning.

If the bike isn't braking properly, you don't start by rebuilding the engine.

What kinda bike you got there cheesey? Original key? Buggered up cylinder maybe? Has someone tried to steal the bike and possibly jammed a screwdriver in there? If it happens more when cold then I would suspect the tolerance inside the cylinder tightens up, thus making it harder to line up the pins, etc. have you tried wd40 or similar down the old key way? I would also suspect the switch for the turn signals probably needs a little TLC. Take it apart and clean up the contacts and check for separated wires. Clean it up, some dialectric grease on the terminals. If it continues you may need a whole new assembly.
How long has it been doing this?

Re: Key won't turn ignition

Original key. I didn't get a spare with it. It's been doing it for the past couple months but just gotten progressively worse. Ill pick up some lube and give it a shot.

Re: Key won't turn ignition

I had the same trouble.
My key was bent.
I either sat on it in my pocket or was a bit rough with it opening my seat.

Re: Key won't turn ignition

Suggest using graphite lube instead of WD40...

Keys do wear, my bike came with 1 key, the first thing 1 did was go down the street and have a spare made. If your want that OEM Honda look you can order a blank (uncut) key through a dealer for like $8. I suggest you have a spare key made by a good locksmith ASAP, before it gets any worse, for 2 reasons:

1. you said you only have one key, everybody needs a spare, I can think of a couple times I would've been SCREWED without a spare. One time I let a key wear so bad it broke in the ignition, luckily there was barely enough to get side cutters to grab, got a ride home and grabbed my SPARE KEY.
2. everybody loses a key at some point in their life, do you want to pay for a new cylinder then not have it match your trunk?
Spend the $2-$3, save a lot of hassle and maybe some $ later. other than that to all the above suggestions, BTW,I also use graphite lube for locks.

Re: Key won't turn ignition

This weekend, I'll be able to tackle the problem once and for all. My work schedule is a little hectic. Ill use the press at work and get it totally straight, and then make a shopping trip for dielectric grease and graphite lube. I'll order a new blank tonight. Thanks for all your guys' help. I'll keep you updated.

Re: Key won't turn ignition

Quick update: I got the key totally straight and put the graphite lube in there to no avail. I'm going to order a new blank in a couple minutes.
