Is Castrol GTX 20W-50 oil proper for my blade?

Good day everyone,

I wish to change my oil for obvious reasons. I looked around the auto shops and those that sell motor oil today and saw the Castrol GTX oil which says it meets and exceeds API SL. I cannot find a motorcycle oil. My manual tells me that I should only use API SF or SG. I did a bit of research and I found these two very convincing arguments. One says not to touch oil with SL rating (Motorcycling -- The Honda V4 Files and More) while this site Motorcycle Motor Oil seems to suggest that it is fine to use SL. There is another that also suggests Castrol seems to work fine (CAN YOU USE CAR OIL FOR A MOTORCYCLE? - Yahoo! Answers).

On the oil container label it says 'contains anti-wear addictive' if this will help.

After my research I got stuck and confused. Can I please seek your guidance on this please if I can use the said oil?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Aomoro

Hey mate, i did use car oil along time ago, i ended up having to pull my clutch plates out and cleaning the stuff off by hand. All my clutch did was slip.

Just use motorcycle oil, its what its made for.

Use motorcycle oil.
Definately do not use anything with any sort of anti-wear or friction additives.
Why are you looking in auto shops, you don't have any motorcycle dealers where you are? You also need a filter.

Oh? That means I will keep then with the motorcycle oil...unfortunately types of oil is very limited on the island and most oils imported are for automobiles.

Yes bladeracer...we do not have any quality motordealers on the island. There might be one which is the Yamaha. It imports bikes as well but are very small like the 110CC. Perhaps I will check with them. n case there there is no motorcycle oil do I have other choices?

MikeGandy and Bladeracer - thanks guys for the advice, really appreciated.

Kind regards,

Aomoro

Yes, you can use _some_ car oils as long as they do not have any friction additives which will prevent your clutch from working.
Are there any other motorcycle riders you can talk to about what they're using in their bikes?

Thanks bladeracer for the prompt response. I will take your advice if there are in fact no motorcycle oil on the island which will requires a thorough lookout on the car oils then to avoid using oil with friction properties. Oh I totally forgot that too - speak with the other motorcyclist!

Thanks again bladeracer.

Also for your info, 10W40 is the correct weight of oil.

Surely Canada gets a lot colder than Tarawa?

Why don't you just buy the proper oil online? If you can't find it locally at a store, then order from a distributor online.

Interesting point...I didn't even think that hotter climates might call for a different weight oil from the factory. What do they call for in the land of Auzzzz.?

Re: Is Castrol GTX 20W-50 oil proper for my blade?

Thanks everyone for sharing their advises. Yes Tarawa is hotter than Canada so I thought that 20W 50 would be suitable for my hot climate (which is usually does in a year).

Yes ordering online will be my only course then though I still have one more shop to see.

Good day everyone and thanks again.
