buying a cali registered, no title 2008 cbr1000rr in hawaii

so i found a ad for a 2008 CBR1000RR, i live in hawaii. the bike is registered in california but the seller has no papers other than a notarized bill of sale. i know here in hawaii not even that will get you anywhere, but i know some states are more lenient than others. what kind of problems will i go through trying to get it in my ownership, provided im able to hunt down the previous owner, and verify the bike is clean? i do have friends and family in california that can help me out with any in person stuff. are there any mechanical stuff i should look out for? i currently ride a 2004 cbr1000rr. i figure this bike im looking at is cheap enough that even if im not able to find the title, i could source a frame and title, swap over parts and id still be up ahead. thanks for any help!

Did you talk to the DMV? They should have a form you can complete and a procedure to follow in getting this done. I'm sure it's a daily clerical task.
I never heard of a mechanical issue with a CBR that's been maintained and ridden below the rev limiter, but doing a fast search online, a few buzz about oil consumption issues, that could result from many factors.

Re: buying a cali registered, no title 2008 cbr1000rr in hawaii

heres an update-

picked up the bike ($2500) ran over everything, its the smoothest running bike ive ever owned. just made 10k miles, full service records. was able to get in contact with the registered owner. hes currently deployed in the philippines, and will soon be stationed in florida. hes willing to do whatever nessasarry paperwork to help me get the title, and it seems like california has a specific form for it (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf)
he just needs to fill it out and mail it in to california DMV, but one thing were not so sure about is -

1. if it needs to be notarized, will the seal of a florida state notary be sufficient? if not what can be done about this? does it even need to be notarized?

2. since im out of state as well, will california mail the title to me?

thanks for any help!

All questions the DMV can answer, as you said, there is a form for it. Cali mails titles to the owner who registered it in Cali, regardless of what state he's living in now. FL has nothing to do with this, it was never titled in FL, and if he gets a Cali title, he can just sign that over to you and mail it.

Re: buying a cali registered, no title 2008 cbr1000rr in hawaii

i only ask about florida since that is where is would be notarized if it needs to be, and it seems the form needs to be notarized if mailed in. im wondering if it may not be valid since the seal is from a different state.

how does section 4 and 5 work then? do i need to be a resident of california to be able to have ownership released to me? also will i need to pay the back tax to request a duplicate title or can i just pay that in hawaii while transferring ownership? will the form still need to be notarized if the registered owner just requests a new title instead of a release of ownership?

sorry for all the questions, but i actually did try calling the DMV for this and they said they cant give any information over the phone if im not the registered owner...i feel it was just a load of BS and the operator just wanted to get off the phone haha thanks for everybodys help again

Re: buying a cali registered, no title 2008 cbr1000rr in hawaii

Perhaps the easiest solution if to have him give power of attorney for someone to represent him in California so Cali notary can honor the form properly, and again, FL has nothing to do with it. The Cali title is the document he needs to duplicate, and sign over to you, mail it to Hawaii, and you title it in Hawaii.
