CBR900RoadRacer build

So I thought I would start a small build thread on here. Picked up a low speed crash 900rr.
All the damage was cosmetic and it ran great. I have always liked the 900 but never liked the tail. The bikes are big and wide and always seemed low and covered the rear wheel. So I figured while I was putting it back together I would do some slimming down. Here's the mess I started with after I stripped off all the stuff I wasn't going to use.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

So the reason why I call this my road racer build is because in July I'll be spending my family vacation in Tennessee. So I thought I would put a bike together to take on the tail of the dragon. After seeing some other builds and a lot of hate for the stock tail this is my new tail piece.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

to the .org! Not a fan of the tail, actually looks like the same one (or very similar) to Lambchops' tail section on his 900RR. Keep us posted on your progress! It doesn't look like a big mess, so you seem to be getting a fairly good start on it =)

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

This is a very budget build. So really the plans are to make a very clean resto mod 900. The bike has a fox twin clicker rear shock I just raised the bike back up to ride height because it had been lowered 3 inches. It also has two brothers triple clamps. I just rebuilt the forks and added racetech springs. Waiting on the new gas tank to get here then it will be ready for paint. I do have all the front plastics I had to replace the front upper because of the original being busted.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

Did you get to ride the bike before tearing it down? I have a set of Race Tech springs to set the forks up to my... fluffy... weight =) I have all the parts to actually get them done, but after spending so much time getting the stock shocks dialed in just how I wanted them I have really hesitated getting them done.... Let me know how it feels afterward, or compared to the original if you can. Might be the one thing that finally pushes me over the edge.

Its the same tail as lambchops. I have used this tail on other builds before. It does take some modding to get it to for a 900. I like the tail I think it cleans up the rear of these bikes the stock tail is so big and I don't need 2 seats because I hate riding 2 up anyway. Not everyone is going to like it and I understand that. I feel like the tail gives it that more race bike look.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

I definitely agree with you on the race-bike look. Once it's all painted up it really changes the dynamic of it. Even with the tail, I would probably trade my 954 for his (LC's) 900.... but he also has a 1000 (RR4) motor in it =)

It was 18 degrees when I bought the bike so the ride was down the street and back. The bike was lowered and the forks leaked my buddy is a motorcycle tech and pushed me to do the springs and helped me set it up for my weight. If it helps I'm 6'1 and 230lbs.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

Also I have been kicking around the idea of trying to trade the pm wheels for a SSSA and rear wheel. Then going back to a stock front wheel. I don't hate the pm wheels. I just feel like there not my style.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

^^ those rims look terribly heavy... Someone has a SSSA for sell in the classifieds (VFR800 one I think). You could always bounce off LC's build to find out what you need to machine on it as he originally had the same thing on his.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

The PM wheels aren't that heavy, back in the day they had a race spec thickness (=thin) and a road spec. I had the road spec and even with the 6inch wide rear it wasn't that bad. The front was a 17, so either way they were going to add some ounces. If the polish is too much you could powder coat them I guess.

This has the potential to be a great thread. As I am a complete fanatic of the older 900's (check my threads if you haven't already) I will provide a subtle suggestion. MORE AND BETTER PHOTOS!!!!!! lol

Where did the tail come from? I love it and would consider morphing it onto my 93. I have a Sharkskins original solo seat (yeah, that would cover the Titanic) and the rear could use a facelift.

Looking forward to your progress here Ready2fight. Keep it up! And don't worry about Demon, I've learned over the last year he doesn't like anything.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

The tail is a 2004 honda rs125 tail. I got it for yoyodyneti.com that guy is great the quality is as good if not better than any hot bodies part I have ever used. And he is half as much than anyone. I paid $105 delivered to my door. I will be taking more and better pics as soon as my computer is back up and running. I'm doing this from my phone now and it did take nice pics till I cracked the lens working in the shop.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

This build is also being done on a very thin budget because I have a lot of projects going right now. So this more of a resto mod build than a full custom. I wish I had the time and money to go all out.

Re: CBR900RoadRacer build

So I got side tracked with work and other projects but know I'm back on my restomod build. Here are a few pics I took. I finished the subframe. Just need to make a few brackets to hold wiring and battery. Also like I said before this is being done on a slim budget. So high end parts are out of reach. And time is never on my side with work and family. So to kinda off set those things I thought I would try my hand at carbon wrapping parts. In the pic I did not do the resin yet but I glued down the carbon for a trial piece. I like how it turned out so next will be the fenders and gas tank. Enjoy guys I will doing more updates asap.
