Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

So i noticed one day after taking of my cover that this crack ahd formed in my tank. I feel like it was there before but not as pronounced. There is also a soft raised bubble where my thumb is in the photos. Which means something is under there. Idk what.

I'm fearful because this may mean i need a new tank or something of the sort. Anyone have any ideas.

A week ago i was trying wheelies and did land hard once. My chest hit the tank, lost my breath but that was it. Could that impact have damaged everything?

Is it dented below the crack? Get a mechanics mirror and look in through the gas cap. See if it's cracked on the inside. Looks like it's kinda just paint, but I'm not an authority on paint. That sucks dude. Surprised your giant pecs didn't smash the entire thing.

Re: Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

theres no dent below the crack just the tank sloping. I'm pretty sure air got underneath the paint due to the dramatic rise in temperature and that i usually have it covered. Even in the heat.

Honestly im suprised i didn't crush the suspension. I gassed it over a lil bump on purpose and that front end went up and i said OH HELL NO. and shoved it down. Thought for sure i broke something on it haha.

Re: Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

The tank has been repaired before and the crack is in the body filler from what I can see.
You will need to remove the old body filler and redo the repair.

Aye. so that means stripping the tank down? and having it repaired. What are the chances of this surviving till winter? Then maybe i can remove it and have it fixed by a shop. (it will need to be repainted.

It should last, the worst that can happen is that it can crack more and the filler will fall off completely.

If there filler there, then that's all it is. It's pretty uncommon for the steel structure of the tank to crack like that unless is was heated red hot and dropped in liquid nitrogen or something really cold to cause a stress fracture of the metal.

Toss a magnet on it. If it doesn't stick = filler.

So if there is filler there... Does that mean the P.o. Broke the tank?? Like a hole formed and he filled it and now the work is falling apart meaning I need a new tank? I'm trying to think what do you have to do to crack the top of the tank...

Not necessarily. It means was probably just dented. Used the filler to reshape he tank to normal. You just crushed the filler and the crack is between the filler and the top of the repair. Meaning the filler just filled in a dent most likely.

Re: Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

It doesn't necessarily mean the tank has a crack in it. Most likely just a dent that's been repaired with bog. If the tank was cracked I think you'd have fuel leaking out of it when full. If its only dented it won't be a problem to still use it.
Where the dent is, it looks like it was maybe a stunting tank.

Re: Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

Well its cover up right? So pick at the paint and see whats what it obviously needs repair paint wise. Coulda been bad previous paint job it lifted and cracked. So chip away just a lil bit :-) then you tell us if its a crack. Lol obviously if you dont smell fuel you should rest assured its not busted.
Someone should be able have that tank painted done and ready for the bike for like 200 dollars honda paint is high be cheaper just get really close from paint store. Should only take 2 days tops.

That's bog coming away due to water getting under and reacting with the steel.
Has to come out and be re-bogged.

Re: Crack ontop of gas tank and soft spot.

Thanks guys so much. once i get some more time i'll start chipping at it.... prollygonna leave it alone for a bit simply cause its still pretty looking

Most likely got dented. Pretty sure the P.O. ex wife was insanse she did a number on some other parts of the bike must have missed that part.
