My first significant issue

I decided to pop my rocker cover on tonight and, after laying it down, popped the bolts in and nipped them up. I reached down on the exhaust side and could feel a gap between the gasket and cover, gave it a little rock and there was indeed a lot of free movement in the cover itself. I thought I'd nip up the bolts to address this .. it sheared. I know the gasket wasn't trapped so haven't figured out why there was movement yet but I now have a broken stud to extract and a missing rocker cover bolt - anyone got any spares?!

Re: My first significant issue

I extracted the bolt with nothing more than a small screwdriver, wasn't tight at all. That's out and a set were found on ebay so hopefully shouldn't hold things up

What caused the valve cover to not seat? Sounds like you thought you had the bolts all snugged up, but cover was still loose?

Re: My first significant issue

No idea, took it all off (gasket was here it should be) and refitted it 'dry' and it seated fine. After that I put sealant on the half moons and it dropped in as expected. I just put it down to one of those things sent to ruin your day

That said, a quick search shows a lot of people having snapped rocker cover bolts, it may be worth changing these if pulling the cover off in the future

Re: My first significant issue

For completeness, the rubber washers were missing from the bolts so they were seating too far in the head which was stressing them and meaning they didn't clamp the cover. Fitting some washers fixed the problem!
