The Achilles Heel

Im going to be getting my bike road worthy, nothing fancy....for now , by the end of February but I want to know what is the Achilles Heel of 954 motors? What makes them just say "I quit" and what can I do about it to fix it. What about high revs and or oiling issues? Can they handle being on the rev limiter?

Re: The Achilles Heel

2nd gear goes out, with other transmission issues. When you ask "can they handle being on the rev limiter" I wonder what is the purpose if you aren't racing, but just want it road worthy? Doesn't riding on the rev limiter say "abuse?" It's the whole idea of an event like racing, to put the maximum stress on the engine. If you're going to do this you have to go over the engine first to make sure everything is right. Fresh oil, proper level, cooling system working properly, proper valve clearances, good compression on all the cylinders (within 10% of each other), and timing. Otherwise you're asking for trouble.

Re: The Achilles Heel

A month doesn't go by when we don't see a charging system melt down, cam chain tensioner shot, and fuel pressure regulator failures on these too. Buy an APE manual tensioner kit for $50. Honda should have called this model the Yugo.

I remember that. Scared people away even faster. Consumer Reports did an article on the car. They said "This is the worst car we ever tested, ever."

I remember that also. Bertone-Fiat X1/9's were bogo at the Saab dealership I worked at. Scared everyone away!

The Yugo's would come off the Nu-car carrier and need to be jump started. What a piece of trash.

Re: The Achilles Heel

Yugo...PAH. You Merkins never got the Triumph TR7, pick one up from the showroom, leave it out overnight in the rain and come out to a pile of verdigris in the morning.

Re: The Achilles Heel

Some 954's have an issue with the block cracking between 1 and 2 cylinders. Seems honda pushed that motor just a little too far.

Re: The Achilles Heel

Even more reason to call these Yugo bikes, huh? It's a shorter list to talk about what they did right.

Re: The Achilles Heel

Most of the bikes also have the HTEV/HVIX servo motor issue, its plastic gears strip and it stops working.
