Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

go to sprocket center's web page. they have pretty much every combo worth looking at as a kit at unbeatable prices. they are cut to length for your bike/sprocket selection.

here is a link to 520 conversion kits for your bike. ive heard nothing but good stuff about their "superlite" kits. my personal choice currently is JT sprockets with an RK chain in oem 530 pitch.

honestly tho your not going to get a bad choice from anything they offer. RK, DID, or EK chains are all top end. the same goes for the sprockets they sell. they also sell 525 conversion kits. i cant justify putting a 520 kit on what is essentially a liter bike for the very marginal performance gains over the longevity of the product life and increased safety factor of having the bigger oem pitch. just my personal thoughts after much research on the topic. i just ride on the street. if i were trying to break my personal lap record at the track and was a few thousandths off i guess i might consider it. like i said tho for me on the street id rather have better life out of my chain n sprocket along with less concern my chain is going to pop n destroy my engine case/my leg.

anyway, like i said sprocket center is the business. the prices are as good as you will find for those items and they have just about anything worth buying. check umm out....

heres a link for the 929/954 520 kits

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

I think any combination from a well known brand will serve you well especially the ones Kevin listed. Just stay away from the Cheap ebay crap. I have a DID Chain with Sprocket Specialists aluminum sprocket set. I went +1 on the rear and left the front stock, this has been..By far... the best performance upgrade and not to buzzy on the highway either. Don't expect it to last long, especially on a liter bike, well worth it.

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

DID chain, steel sprockets for longevity, no point in alloy sprockets for normal use.

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

I read theres no point in doing a 520 conversion if doing steel sprockets? Whats a good sprocket brand? I read alot of people dislike vortex sprockets

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

I now know that the benefits of a 520 conversion are negligible compared to a 530, I did this upgrade way back when I was wee squid and no one could convince me otherwise. The gearing is what made the world of difference. RK makes complete 520 kit with 15/43 if your going the 520 route.

Yeah the main reason to go 520 with lightweight sprockets is to reduce the Rotating mass, I assume its good for racing when the little things help with laptimes etc. If you're going to run steel sprockets you might as well stick with a 530 setup, otherwise no point in going 520.

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

Last I heard and also have on my R1, the EK3D 520 is the 520 chain to have. The tensile strength is stronger then some reputable 530. If you want to compromise, they now sell light weight steel sprockets, I have the driven ones on my R1. If you go on my CBR thread build, somewhere in there I compare the weight of the light weight steel and aluminum sprocket on a scale. The Ek3D set was almost $300 while the vortex set on my cbr was like half the price. Next go around, I'm putting 520 aluminum on the R1, the weight saving was just too promising.

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

I'm partial to the DID 520 ERV series with AFAM sprockets. Worked well on my 93 900 that had 130 RWHP. Good quality street stuff. Steel front and hard anodized aluminum rear. Here's a pic

Re: Best Chain and Sprocket Brands?

does to me. like i said ive heard nothing but good stuff about the superlite sprockets. ive read a lot of different posts from people using that chain on liter bikes without any problems. here is a little chart on d.i.d. chain specs you can use to compare strength vs weight vs wear from all their chains. more specifically between a 520 and 530 set-up. it gives you some idea about its properties.

D.I.D Chain Specifications

as far as price goes you certainly couldnt find those items cheaper separately. you might find one item cheaper here n there but by the time you add in shipping youd end up paying more.

that is a wise choice man. ive seen people make poor choices n pay for them in different ways. some worse than others. its my firm opinion there are some things you dont even think about going cheap on with a sport bike. chains n sprockets being third right behind tires and brakes.
