Need advice on cutting new CBR1000RR key

2007 CBR1000RR (USA)

My motorcycle was stolen and the thieves broke the ignition. I have a new ignition but now I also have two keys. I was told by a mechanic that the I can cut one side of a key blank using the new ignition key and cut the other side of the key blank using the old key that fits the tank and seat lock. The only drawback, he says, would be that sometimes I'd have to turn the key around when it doesn't work the first way I put it in either key hole but at least I would only need to carry one key.

Any thoughts on this before I waste a $12 key blank?

i mean if that will in fact work cant you just mark the key so you know which way youre sliding it in?

Re: Need advice on cutting new CBR1000RR key

I can do that 954Kevin but I need to know if anyone knows if this will actually work first. I would hate to waste a key blank only to find that it doesn't work. Thanks for your suggestion, though.

Re: Need advice on cutting new CBR1000RR key

lol i guess my help kinda goes without saying. : ) i have no idea if that would work or not.

did you already buy the key blank? i can understand not wanting to waste 12$ plus the few bucks it costs to get it cut, but maybe just get one of these blanks

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pcs-Blank-K...7b3b80&vxp=mtr

its 1.50$ if it doesnt work out your only out like 5 bucks. i actually have this same key i got cut to match mine as a back up since i only had one and like it better than the honda key it came with. just a thought, sorry i cant help you better with your actual question tho. if nobody else knows might call an actual lock smith n explain the idea to him im sure they would be able to tell you definitively if it would work.

Re: Need advice on cutting new CBR1000RR key

Thanks! That is a good option. Too bad it's in China and will take weeks to arrive. I already bought the $12 blank. I'll search eBay for a cheaper non-OEM key that can be delivered in days and try it out first. Maybe in the meantime, someone may know and respond here.

Thanks for your help.
