RRV rev limiter kicking in a 10,000rpm?!

Hi,

Recently picked up a 97 RRV. For some reason the rev limiter is set at 10,000rpm, kicks in just as a normal rev limiter would, but at 10k.

I'm assuming that as the redline is at 11k that's where the rev limiter should be?

Is it a programmable thing that's been changed at some point or an ignition problem?

Only adjustable back then if the ECU was swapped out for aftermarket. Even then, it was pretty uncommon. I see you have a slip on exhaust. It's possible that you need to go up a size or two on the main jets fooling into thinking its rev limiter? Or the tacho could be off a thousand rpm. So far as I know it should pull right to 11k. Check with a remote tacho if possible to see if indicated 10k is actually 11k.

Its definitely not fueling related, at exactly 10,000 rpm it hits what feels exactly like the rev limiter and ignition gets cut.

I may have to get it on a rolling road to see what its doing

i honestly don't think mine (99) has a rev limiter, didn't think anything without EFI would have something like that. with the slip on can it gets raspy around 10.5K, but i've run it well into the 12k range and it never tried to stop me.

This is interesting to hear Packman. As far as I know unless the ECU has been tampered with or changed out to aftermarket there is a rev limiter, I guess you just haven't found yours yet

I've got an RRV. If it has a rev limiter, why does it have a red line to tell you when its over revving?

Good question Pete, and my answer is because not everyone is as smart as you or I.

I've done a bit research, threads here in Fireblades about it-here's just one with some Info from Bladeracer: https://www.fireblades.org/forums/hon...it-cbr900.html I believe that even as the redline is there say at 11k, the rev limit may not kick in until 13k. Th engine isn't making any more power by revving that high, but the red lines I think are there to give you a clue that you don't need to rev it any higher, and the limiter is there to avoid catastrophic failure. They all have limits, otherwise the motor could over rev and grenade.

This is a good answer.
My 954 limiter kicks in at about 12.5 and I think redline is 11k but there is nothing to be gained by pinning it. It's stops pulling about 10.5.
It is also important to note that the limiter will not stop your bike from over revving on downshifts.

Re: RRV rev limiter kicking in a 10,000rpm?!

the above is correct. sometimes though you lose time by shifting up for a quick bit before shifting back down for a corner than you would by simply staying in gear and going slightly over the red line, even though the engine is not making any more power.

my civic had a 8K red line but the limiter didn't come in till 8250. mathematically 8300 was when the valves started to float.

I honestly didn't think my bike even had one, but i guess i just haven't flogged it enough yet. go figure, i thought i beat this thing pretty hard.

Re: RRV rev limiter kicking in a 10,000rpm?!

Just discovered my CBR F3 have a rev limiter this weekend at the track. I didn't realize it was a rev limiter, felt just like when my coils went bad and the engine would not rev past a certain RPM. Started to bog down then the power return after you let off the gas. I would not dismiss the fueling or spark notion so easily, they all feel about the same and can easily be confused as something else

Who do people use for rolling roads in the SE? (im in SE London) ideally someone who understands carbs?

Re: RRV rev limiter kicking in a 10,000rpm?!

A bit more diagnosis, if I keep the throttle pinned when it stutters it will clear its throat and Rev on through to 12.5 which is fun. I'm assuming it's carbs / fuel related. Fuel filter seems an easy first fix so will give that a go.

It's intermittent but happens more often than not.

Re: RRV rev limiter kicking in a 10,000rpm?!

Quick update;

Got it on the rolling road at HM Racing, having ruled everything out they removed the ancient Datatool Alarm and that cured it instantly.

Their theory is that resonance at those revs was messing with the alarm and the immobiliser was cutting in, fair play to them, I would have never worked that out

I now have full power and revs
