CBR 929RR Blew spark plug out head today

Riding back to work I had a spark plug pop out of the head. I immediately pulled over and shut the bike off and pushed it a mile back to my house. I tilted the tank up and removed the air bod to find the #1 cylinder plug had come out.

Is this repairable without splitting the bike in half? I have already replaced the bike as my primary and am looking to sell it soon. Obviously I need to fix this but as I'm selling it to my boss I don't want to totally half ass the repair.

Looks like the time-sert kit is 250 new. Maybe I can get one used? or maybe do the heli coil kit?

It's very difficult to do it properly in situ.

Ideally you want the head off and get a specialist engineering company to drill it out and do the insert. They'll use a proper bench drill so it's perfectly lined up.

It is an absolute bummer, I do really feel for you.

I've done a time-sert on my car no problem so I am familiar with the process. the taps are usually self centering so I'm not really worried about messing it up just getting in there and the overall cost on a bike I am trying to get rid of.

the difference with a car is the access is usually good (unless it's a 911!), this will be tough to get enough access not to bodge it.

I saw another person pulled the frame and front suspension off the bike to get access

you can effectively split the bike in two pieces. id be concerned about getting shaving falling thru into the cylinder with the head on the bike. im not sure a helicoil would be the best bet for this particular instance. id think if you got the head off the bike a good metal shop would likely have the stuff to do a time-sert and itd likely not cost any more than buying a kit. honestly pulling the head off the engine isnt all that much more work after splitting the bike. : ) ive never done either job tho so take my comments for what they are worth.

Did you inspect the threads on the plug and head? Maybe it was loose and just finally came out? Just looking at the simplest resolution first. I found a loose pug on my ZX6 years ago after three years and I was the original owner and the bike had never been worked on before. Good luck!

Threads are so shallow on the 929, it's a common problem, mine did it You will need the head off, to do it properly, and i haven't changed the plugs since, for fear of pulling the helicoil out, though the valves are getting done soon, so plugs will be done then.

I had the same issue a couple of years ago.
I bought the kit for around $250 and did the work myself, then sold the kit on ebay for $170. total cost for me was around $80 + the cost of beer.

nothing on Ebay at the moment. waiting for tax return to come them I'll get the kit. I may or may not take the head off. its a small thread area and the one I did on my car left very few filings when the bits where greased properly.

The extra step of pulling the head adds extra possibility for leakage afterward and I feel adds an extra point of failure that I would probably like to avoid. Splitting the bike apart for the repair will allow me a strait shot at the plug holes so I'm not worried about alignment.

That would be my preferred option as well, you don't have the anxiety every time you change a plug that you'll strip out the insert. Plus the head needs to come off anyway.
