Spark plugs fouling 954

So quick info on my bike. It has around 10,000 miles on it and just a two Bros slip on. Everything else is stock. I changed the plugs 2 years ago with Ngks(not iridium) After taking it out of storage I noticed it was hesitating at higher Rpms. I used stabil for the winter storage. I pulled the plugs and noticed the first cylinder plug was in great shape but they progressively got worse until the fourth which was shot. I check the for and no leaks in the vacuum line. I have no idea what it could be. Any help? I switched around the coils with the fouled plug to make sure all the coils were fine they seem to be all working. I run 87. Any suggestions would be greatly Appreciated.

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

How many miles were on those regular NGK plugs? Lots of frequent short trips possibly?

How's the inside of your air box look (oily?) and when was the last time the air filter (dirty?) was changed?

I would head to your local auto parts store (they are cheap there, around $10/per plug usually) and get a set of the Iridium plugs that the owner's manual calls for.

NGK IMR9C-9H for standard climate use. Run them and see how they fare after a few rides...g'luck !

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

Thanks for the replies. To answer your questions. The air filter is in great shape I was just looking at it last night. The air box is bone dry. I gues you could say I take some short trips maybe 20-30 minute rides? But on open roads not as much city driving.

The plugs maybe have 8-9000 miles and I believe those are the plugs That are in it now

Ok I have to correct myself. Those aren't the plugs that are into because I don't remember but iridium. I did however but what the manual said I'm guessing just regular NGKs? I don't have the Manuel with me at the moment to look

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

Pretty sure the 929 and 954 (being th first FI bikes from Honda) required the Iridium plugs and back in the day they were like $17 bucks each from Honda.

I think the trend was a really hot, fine, spark to compliment the fuel injection.

Your standard plug looks overly nasty though, oily, dirty, crusty......how's the engine oil look and how often do you change it?

Try the OE Iridium plugs as suggested, see if any differences.

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

You guys are absolutely right. I was a little confused with the iridium I didn't think it was a necessity at the time. It's my first bike so when I went to get new plugs and they didn't have the iridium a in stock I think they cross referenced them to a regular pair of NGKs.I bought some today and threw them in. I usually change my oil 3 times a year or maybe every 1000-1500 miles. I use rotella. Took the bike out and it runs perfect so I guess time will tell.

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

I know the plugs make me look like a schmuck of a bike owner but I'm really anal about keeping up on the oil changes. I can't explain the terrible condition the plugs are in. The oil looks dark in the site glass. Not black though. Probably 5-600 miles on this oil change

Not to worry Mitch we don't judge that badly on the site, we all text each other afterwards and make fun

Your oil changes must get pretty costly. 3-4 times a year!? Your not getting your money's worth that for sure. 3k is a pretty "standard" oil change interval. Of course it's your bike also you're free to do what you want.

But please let us know if there is any change with the Iridium plugs.

Re: Spark plugs fouling 954

Thanks a lot for the help. As for the oil changes, I bought this bike 3 years ago from a guy who had it under a tarp. It only had 6000 miles and hadn't been well taken care of. I guess I felt I was trying to make up for its previous life. I will space out the oil changes a little more as you are right.

I will certainly let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help!
