What Did He Do?!?!

Hey guys! So I bought a 2004 CBR1000rr 2 weeks ago. One of the fork seals was leaking so I decided to replace both seals myself. I finish replacing the dry seal and I have started the second. I popped the seal out and I was cleaning the outer tube when I saw the divots... They look like they may have been made by a punch. The burrs of the divots are below the small ridge where the seal seats against before the oil so nothing is poking into the seal.

Does it look like this may be why the seal was leaking? Am I going to have to fix this? I have a lathe and I could probably cut off the burrs that were created but there would still be the deep part of the divot. Dose it look like I can just leave it alone? Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Re: What Did He Do?!?!

No, those won't be causing the seal to leak. The surface that the seal is pressed into looks fine.

I suspect that was caused by someone trying to drive the upper bush into the fork leg, using a very inappropriate tool (likely screwdriver). Someone who should never have been let loose on a car or motorcycle.

Re: What Did He Do?!?!

Holy crap. I just use a piece of pvc pipe over the stanchion and a rubber mallet as a fork seal driver...

Re: What Did He Do?!?!

Okay thanks! I forgot the washer goes between that portion and the seal so (even more) it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the tips!
