954 4th gear problem

Hi,
I went out for a run on my '02 954 and all was fine. Shifted up into 4th gear and after a little bit it started slipping. Shifted back down to 3rd and it was fine, shifted down to 2nd and it was fine. Started shift back up again 3rd was fine again, got back into 4th after a bit it started slipping again. It doesn't feel like clutch slip, more like the gear is slipping. Any ideas on what is wrong and a solution on how to fix it. Tia

Re: 954 4th gear problem

This has been discussed before. Fourth gear is known to be the first one that starts to have issues:

Drop the sump pan. Move the exhaust out of the way. Technically the bike is done or take out more gears... if this is the problem. To confirm, look for a gear tooth at the bottom of the pan.

Re: 954 4th gear problem

Ok an update on my problem. Took the bike out on a test run today and no grinding sound when in 4th. It went perfectly up the box 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th. Came back down the road and went up fine, got too 4th this time it lost drive for a moment then fine, still went up and down the box fine. It felt like I had shut the throttle off for a moment then put it back on again. This only happened once I was higher up the rev range, further down the rev range no issues at all

Re: 954 4th gear problem

I rekon if you drive it hard in 4th it will slip the drive shaft.

The problem won't go away, and doesn't sound like clutch if it was clutch you would be revving it hard and the revs would be flying up but the speed of the bike wont be.

What does the oil look like. Fourth gear is the first that usually goes. If you have the time, it might be worth cracking the case and taking a look.

Re: 954 4th gear problem

Tried getting the sump off yesterday and couldn't get the headers off. Tried looking at the selector drum through the clutch and couldn't get the clutch cover off. Going to try again at the weekend when I've got more time. When I drained the oil it looked fine, when I put it through a sieve it didn't have anything untoward in it

Re: 954 4th gear problem

Once you get a look at it, if you don't see anything wrong, post some pictures.

Re: 954 4th gear problem

90% of the time this is caused by a very slight chamfer on the 4 gear internal dogs...Only way to fix is either buy a new gear or undercut the gear slightly by 1-2 degrees. Then fit a factory pro shift star and uprated selector spring and this will help....
