Re: Headstock bearings

Took my forks out of my 929 to send them off for revalve and resping. With steering damper disconnected and without the mass of the front wheel and forks it was immediately apparent that head bearings were knackered. Definite 'notch' when turning yokes from dead centre. Never noticed it on the road. Bike has only done 12000 careful miles.
Surprised they should be shot at this mileage. anyone else out there experienced similar problems?

Whilst forks were out it would be naughty not to replace them so cost me about $70 for new bearings. Genuine Honda (Koyo) bearings, angular contact ball race type, not taper rollers (as per mod to 954).

Re: Headstock bearings

Replace them while apart.
Apparantly i have been told by my dealer, that they are not very well lubricated from new and doing wheelies tendes to chew them out quickly, mine got notchy on my 929, after getting them greased and adjusted they were good.

Do unto others, before some prick does it to you!

Re: Headstock bearings

The OEMs are notorious for not adequately greasing areas like that, and the swingarm pivot, suspension linkage, etc. Even the GP bikes (125, 250) come with much less grease than optimum. It pays to check early.
