battery issues

Having battery issues with my cbr1000rr05 installed with datatool alarm seems to drain battery voltage and having to charge it nearly on a daily basis, battery tests at 12.8v at standstill drops to 10.4 on start up and when idling at 2/3000rpm reading 14.5v any body had problems with this or should I just buy a new battery.

Re: battery issues

How old is the battery? Any previous charging problems with the current battery?

The key phrase in your post is "drops to 10.4 at start up". Replace battery.

If it happens again knowing your charging system is good, remove the alarm.

Re: battery issues

Considering that I'm having battery related issues, I'll chime in with what I know or have been researching.

1- Your idle should be at 1200 ~100rpm.
2- I think the charging system reads a little differently than for example a car alternator
3- A service manual gives the various voltages that should be read in different conditions (I can't provide them off top of my head)
4- I'm hoping the resolution to my problem is only a battery replacement, in your case the high idle may mask the source of the problem (RR and/or Stator).

The reviving voltage isn't necessarily battery voltage, although I know that's where we get the reading. That number just tells you that the charging system is working.

You need a new battery.

Re: battery issues

Should I ad something to this thread.
In the first place 10.4V is not low on starting to me.
We don´t hear it won´t turn the engine?
As 14v+ is usual for the first few moments the it drops to 13,7V and at idle it apparently does not charge, it shows 12,7.
Last summer my ´96 Blade "melted" 3 accus after an "original" previously had done 10 years! as did the one from new also 10 years.
Though 2 were of this light weight type, the third an expensive said to be everlasting english thing.
The last one is maybe exchanged now as the dealer has send a message on mobile to come for it. Just haven't had the time to go get it.
But from the first failure I had learned to carry a trusted Varta accu under under the rear seat. Just in case.
And on the to top yoke/triple I´ve positioned a voltmeter.
Tiny little thing with double sided tape from the days i was in RC Bikes where we use 2 cell lipo accuse. There it monitor both cells.
Just short it the right way and it shows total voltage.
Now a days I use the thing that puts into the lighter in the car dashboard.
Use one in the car too so quite used to the showings of a voltmeter on the move.
Over the winter generator was proven melted too. Just like 10 years ago with the original accu defeat.
Have had a complete engine swop from a traffic crashed ´96 as no spares are available for a Honda more than 10 years old and in the first place the exchange was to cure a gear change problem I have had from new and drum and gear wheels are no longer available.
There are indeed more details to this story but I have probably to stop somewhere.
Wife yells at me its morning here rain is pouring down but I have the honour of getting morning bread for her coffee on my thread bike!
