Temp Fluctuation

Have an '03 954rr and noticed when turning the bike on the other day that the temp gauge immediately showed around 228F and when I start up the bike the temp jumps all over the place, from -- to 228. The coolant is good/fresh, as is the thermostat. Changed the ECT sensor, but no change. Did notice that if I unplug the sensor, the fan kicks on, but still no change in temp readout. It seems random, but the only thing that was done to the bike prior to the issue was getting the bike dyno tuned, so not sure if some how that is related. Anyone had a similar issue or other ideas to help troubleshoot?

Re: Temp Fluctuation

I've never had this problem, but I dare diagnosing the problem as air bubbles in the system. That could give the inconsistencies of temperature readings... although a faulty sensor or connection could also be to blame. Probably best to open up your Service Manual with a multimeter and see what kind of readings your getting. Then you may be able to rule out the electrical aspects of your issue.

Keep us posted.

Re: Temp Fluctuation

Could be low on fluid or air in the system, not much else that would cause such fluctuation.

So update, looks like it was a result of the dyno. The bike is a track bike so can't take it out on public roads anymore. All I was able to do was just start it and let it warm up once I noticed it. Went to Road America this weekend and once it was ridden around for a couple laps it sorted itself out and now reads correctly w/o any other attempts at a fix, go figure. Thought it was kind of random for it to happen right after being on the dyno and then even having changed the coolant and sensor not fixing it.
