penske 8983 on my 954?

I have an oppourtunity to pick up a used penske 8983 rear shock for the 954. Has anyone tried this model, and would you recommend it?

thanks for any thoughts..

Re: penske 8983 on my 954?

I have an 8987 that was purchased for a 954 and converted. I think the difference is the ride height adjustment, which I believe can be retrofitted by Penske to make it into an 8987.
Once you verify this I'd say go for it. It's a nice product, well built and less expensive than the Swedish competitor product.

Re: penske 8983 on my 954?

Oh, and the instruction manual (available online) blew me away with the flexibility of valve curves available for the shock. Parts change required but it seems like any shock mechanic could do it with the Penske available parts, of course.

Re: penske 8983 on my 954?

cool, thank you for the input. I will probably go for it as i need to change my spring anyway. Im just a little hesitant as my suspension was setup by Catalyst reactions (san fran) and feels great. But its still stock so Im sure it will be a nice upgrade.

Im not trying to threadjack but i have a related question. Does penske put a model # on their parts? My bike came with a Penske shock and i know nothing about it. Can you guys identify it by a pic if there is no model #?

Re: penske 8983 on my 954?

The cylinder thing attached is the remote reservoir and holds oil on the other side of a separating piston. Be careful with it, because if it's damaged the shock will not work until it's replaced.

The shock should be serviced about once every other year under normal use, so whomever you get to service the shock can help you with identifying the model #. Usually they can be identified by the features on the shock and the manuals are available online.
